I got a quote to have my boat waxed at SPBM. It was reasonable but does anyone know any detailers in the area who do a good job at a more reasonable cost? Does SPBM even allow outside contractors?

Not knowing what the quote was will make it difficult for people to tell you if somebody else has a better price. Having said that, I find it hard to believe that many marinas will allow an outside contractor into their facility to perform a service that they offer themselves. Marinas make a living not just on slips.

Many marina's will allow outside vendors as long as 1) they have proper insurance and 2) They revenue share with the marina, 10-20% in most cases.

One of the reasons we use Patsy's Bay Marina is that we can decide who gets to work on our boat and then marina still treats us very well even if we use someone other than them.

FWIW - Haverstraw fits into the guidelines I posted in the beginning of this post. They were at the lower end of scale when we had a slip there.

Good thing I dont own a marina. Fair chance their would be more then 35 pages. I do agree some marinas do work on revenue share especially if there is more work if they can handle. Did not know Haverstraw was one of them.

It was several winters ago when we were getting a custom cockpit enclosure made for our boat. Good thing we had a full canvas cover on the boat as our canvas guy was making templates while Haverstraw's "approved" canvas guy (Patino) was working on the boat next to us.

Sometimes you just need to save a few dollars... ;)

Although you still may be 100% correct on Haverstraw's policy, I'm not sure canvas would count. Isn't Patino a private company renting space from Haverstraw? If so, another canvas guy is not taking away business that Haverstraw offers. The question would be....do they allow other mechanics to come in and work on boats for a percentage? (Excluding speciality or warranty work.) That answer would be more relatable.

Trust me canvas counted.

As for Haverstraws current policies take a look at the agreement you signed. IIRC it spells out something along the lines of only approved outside vendors may be used. Guess how they get approved?

Maybe I'm wrong as to current policy as it's been close to 5 years and they may have changed.

Call Chris at 845-323-1975. He does a lot of boats at Patsy's and other marinas. Tell him Jimmy James recommended him.
