I have sanded and cleaned the fiberglass topside of my small skiff. I applied Interlux topside Polyurethane one part epoxy, and almost immediately dimples appear in the paint. Per the instructions on the can I did not prime the surface since it was in good condition. Any ideas why these dimples show up, lots of them. I have sanded all the paint off and going to try again, but need advice before I waste more time and money. Help if you can.

Thanks

Bruce

Probably fisheyes, the surface was not clean, silicone or oil are the usual culprits. They are usually localized. The other common imperfection is an orange peel look to the surface, usually widespread, from improper application or mix for the conditions.
Not using primer to get good color holdout is always a mistake IMO.

Yeah, I was thinking fisheyes as well. The worst fisheyes are usually a sign of silicones. If you are getting them it is a sign that the surface wasn't chemically clean before painting. If you used silicone containing care products (many waxes and protectants are laoded with silicones) or lubes in the past, getting rid of the stuff can be near impossible.

There are two ways to deal with fisheyes - clean the surface using a suitable solvent (preferred) or add a compatible fisheye preventer / eliminator to your paint. The preventers are simple additives (not real cheap) that you add to paint to compatibilize it with a silicone contaminated surface. If you want to go this route I suggest you contact Interlux for their advice on a compatible fisheye preventer.

i agree with the above. BUT, a common problem isnt that YOU didnt do the prep right... there could have been something in the air that got onto the surface.
im guessing this was done outside? even a neighbor 4 doors down who decided to put tire dressing on his car can ruin your paint job like that (ive been there)
