I spent over a hour over the weekend trying to get my satelite tv working on the boat.

First I come to learn you can no longer shutdown boxes for the winter. You must keep them active.

Second that my old SD box can't be activated. I need a new HD box which will take over a week to come and then I need a tech to come out.

Third my dish will be obsolete soon since it does not do KA band and they are moving away from the 101 sat to the 103 sat.

Seems ATT is really screwing up Directtv.
Most boat owners with older systems will need to have to replace them!

Anyone else having issues?

The account I'm on gets suspended for 6 months and I don't have HD boxes either they are working perfectly.
Maybe you want to switch to Dish network?

Do you have DISH?

I have done this for 15 years and all of sudden ATT does this. I also have directtv in the house, so I don't suspend the account, I suspend the box.

Dave,
I also suspend , have old boxes and old dish . yes they are eventually going to do something but as of a few weeks ago they had no plan. IF they do a switch as they have said for years they first have to upgrade all the residential customers and they haven't done one yet.

oh and my boxes work fine. Before u spend a dime , call CMI . I had a long talk with billy and they have some thoughts on go arounds when the time comes and it hasn't come yet.

I switched to DirecTV from Dish, when Dish changed bands, because my satellite dish could not receive their new signal. I suspend my service for 6 months every year, for a small cost. I have an SD box, and it works fine.

I had a very lengthy email and voice thread with KVH about a month ago to discuss whether or not Directv was going to stop the transmission of SD channels. If they did, my Tracvision M3 would no longer function. I even received an internal memo discussing this which indicated the M1 through M3 domes would be obsolete.

I sent him the memo. He took it to management who indicated the memo was recalled as they have finalized discussions with Directv which will allow "certain" frequencies to be received by the Tracvision domes. The only thing I needed to do was to upgrade my box from the H21 to the H24.

I called Directv and they sent the H24 box for free. It took awhile to get the setup correct, but it is working perfectly. The channels still come in SD, but in my opinion look clearer.

I sure hope they did not lie to me as I really would not upgrade to the HD7 dome because it would look ridiculous on my boat and it is very expensive.

We also suspend that box on the even years when we go to Alaska for the summer in our motorhome.

I’ve got a KVH M3 with a M 10 Direct TV mobile receiver for SD reception. Hopefully it keeps working or there will be a reasonable work around I can use.
I don’t have DirectTV at home so I can’t swap around boxes.
I initially planned on just keeping the account active for the season but it turns out I use it over the winter to watch the news on my iPad when I go to the gym in the morning. It’s an add on to my family cell phone plan anyway.
I briefly thought about switching to DirectTV service at home when I was activating the account, but they were such morons with the boat account that I quickly changed my mind and stuck with FIOS.
It was such a nightmare to activate the service through DirectTV when I got the boat that I don’t want to deal with spending hours on the phone with them again trying to explain that the system is on a boat. They don’t grasp that concept.
I had to get KVH to activate the account with them and even the rep that helped me at KVH grew frustrated trying to deal with them.

My DirecTV account is managed by Solid Signal, they seem to be a High level DirecTV that know how to get Marine/RV account done
You may want to reach out to them??

I used Solid Signal, quick, easy and great to work with.

At this point I am just waiting for the new box.
My old box can't be activated.
KVH is a little different than Intellian bc KVH has the box and ACU in one unit.
I have a real Directtv box, I think it is a H21 which someone said they switched from.
Apparently older boxes are going away but they give you the new one for free, just sucks I have to wait a week or so and have a tech install the box in my house before I can move to the boat.

Dave, I have the KVH M1. Trying to deal with DirecTV is a nightmare, they don't understand that you don't need a service call.

One time when I called them, I specifically told them the installation was on a boat, they insisted on sending a technician out, when he saw it was a boat, he told me he could not do anything.

They try to direct you to their marine branch, who only want to sell you equipment you don't need.

When I finally called Solid Signal, they got me what I needed and got me connected. The person I spoke to gave me his personal cell phone number, in case I had any issues.

My box is from Solid Signal.
But it is obsolete I am told by them.
So I have to follow thru with this and let them get me a new box and see.
But beyond the box will be the decommision of 101 sat.
That will hurt us all!

Yeah but we can't stream on boats.
Cruise ships, pleasure boats, planes, we all need something in the sky, right?

I suspect marine broadband will get cheaper. It already is getting cheaper for aircraft. If you are close enough to shore to have access to AT&T unlimited data 4G or higher, DirectTVNOW does not count towards any limit. Put it on your IPAD and connect via an HDMI cable to your TV.
Bottom line is SAT TV will die soon and there is not enough marine subscribers to make it economical. I suspect you will have to go marine broadband and stream off shore.

We do, but it's not economically feasible for them to launch multi-million dollar satellites for a diminishing user base.

Apples and Oranges:
DirectTV Now (a streaming service) is different from DirectTV Satellite Service. Same company but two different types of accounts.
I use the DirectTV app on my iPad to watch content through my boat satellite account at the gym all the time and while I can certainly watch it on my iPad on the boat too, it will not allow me to view it on a TV when I connect it with an HDMI cable.
It used to let me do it, but it stopped letting me do it last year.
It’s blocked and I get a content not available message on the TV screen.
I don’t have DirectTV Now (a different app) because I don’t have internet on the boat and while I had considered getting it at home my experience with the terrible customer service at DirectTV and them not understanding the difference between a mobile account on a boat and a residential account (they kept wanting to send a residential technician to my boat) I steered clear of them.
You need a DirectTV Now account to stream from that app, you can’t do it with a regular DirectTV App. Two different services from the same company.

They are great! Bought a 3 way splitter from them to send the signal to all 3 TV’s on the boat at the same time so depending where we are on the boat we can choose which one we want to watch..
They even offered a solution to be able to watch different channels on different TV’s at the same time with a destacker but I didn’t do it because we normally only watch one TV at a time anyway.
Just wasn’t worth it to me to be paying a monthly fee for multiple boxes.

some comments, 'it will not allow me to view it on a TV when I connect it with an HDMI cable'
One trick I use with iphone/ipad is screen mirror to apple tv. Can't use device for anything else
while doing this but old ipads/iphones/apple tvs are cheap.

For those that want to adventure into cord cutting at low cost, my current solution is using an
old laptop (needs minimum 1tb storage), hdhomerun quatro, nighthawk netgear router and plex with plex pass.
This setup allows dvr of over the air content (removing most commercials), playback on a large variety
portable devices, and sharing of the 4 tuners live via the hdhomerun app.

If you set this up at home where the router is connected to the internet you can stream your DVR, and local live tv
to anywhere you have an internet connection.

They are different and that is my point. I used to have DirectTV and I dropped it in favor of DirectTVNow. My point was this. As Sat TV becomes non-existent you will have to switch to Sat Internet and stream your TV on your boat through a streaming service such as Hulu, DirectTVNOW or something else. Simply put SAT TV is dying a quick death and your only choice if you are off shore is SAT Internet and stream. I did it all last year on the airplane over the ocean.

DirecTV also will not allow a lot of live programs to be streamed through your account. DirectTVNOW will. For instance my mother is in the hospital and she loves Jeopardy. My sister tried streaming Jeopardy through DirectTV. It will not allow it. DirectTVNOW, no problem. Also DirectTVNOW will allow "mirroring" for all content. That is hooking up an iPad to a TV. Do it all the time at our EAA Hangar meetings. Finally DirectTVNow has better on demand services. Simply put DirectTVNow has better content and more flexibility. Get SAT internet for your boat and it will work unless it is really crappy service.
