Drain plug? What drain plug?

Took the new dink out for a spin yesterday and as we idled past one of the waterfront bars someone called out and asked if we could give him a tow to the ramp (maybe about a mile away). Turned out the boat was sinking... fast. Motor wouldn't start, bilge pump was dead and the water was already over the floorboards of the CC. Asked them if they had put the drain plug in, they said "yes, both of them"... Anyway the situation was urgent so we took them on the hip and managed to get them to the ramp. The boat sank on the ramp before they could get the trailer ready. As they started to winch it onto the trailer they took out the "drain" plugs which turned out to be the plugs to the cockpit scuppers. Eventually they got the boat winched partly up on the trailer and you guessed it, there was ANOTHER drain (in the usual place) with NO plug...

Poor guy has some explaining to do; it was NOT his boat; but his brother-in-law's (Oops!)

"There are those of us who have forgotten the drain plug and those who will..." This poor soul just joined the "club".

We got a "Good Samaritan" point, an hour's entertainment and another story. The "Mad Money" got her sea-trial as a tugboat.

Sorry, we forgot to take pics...

Moral to the story: Never lend your boat to your idiot in-law...

I didn't know cockpit scuppers had plugs--sounds like a bad idea.

You can get plugs for them. Helps when the cockpit deck is so low that water comes in. The common "flappers" are never watertight.

Sounds like it defeats the purpose of the scupper. I guess you can put a plug in anything.

It defeats the purpose of the scupper, but some CC cockpits will have water in them if you have a big motor and a full load of fuel, ice, etc etc. Been there (poor design I agree). The "flaps" are never completely watertight so the scupper plugs are handy. IF you get flooded you can always pull the plugs.

Anyway for this guy the scupper plugs probably did slow the flooding, but his main problem was he didn't even know about the actual drain plug...
