Hi all.
Located a Alpha 1 Gen 2 lower on CL that was purchased to be used as a backup and from what I can tell, never used.

We are meeting just off the high at lunch time today and I need to quickly ascertain whether this drive is an exact match (gear wise and rotation direction wise) for my damaged one.

He is bringing the lower. My drive is in the back of my truck still attached to the upper. I'm in a business suit so can't really begin to separate the upper and lower on my drive.

What's the easiest way to determine these are exact matches?

Rick,
I'm pretty sure the gear ratio is in the upper half the lowers are all the same. Maybe a quick call to a mechanic to verify that. The drive looks excellent but I think too pricey. Remember there is no warranty or recourse with CL.

Shows some wear on upper shaft.
Check threads in case where mounting studs should be.
Has been painted...prop bearing carrier retaining nut is painted

turn upper shaft one rotation and see if prop shaft turns to about 7 o'clock.

Never worked on reverse rotation drive but...turn upper shaft clockwise and prop shaft should turn clockwise for standard rotation.

Second look at upper/vertical shaft. There is wear on the splines. Check to see that there is wear on ALL the splines evenly. If not, walk away.

Painted?... I don't see an indication of that... perhaps I will in person.

Turn the upper shaft on the new lower one rotation and if the prop shaft moves to 7 o'clock, what is that telling me? That's it likely is a 1.62?

Will look for uneven wear.

Thanks,

I think I got that gear ratio check bass ackward. Prop shaft 1 rotation and vert shaft 1.62 rotation.

Paint...look at the prop shaft opening. The retaining ring/nut isn't supposed to be painted. The cases should have been painted long before gears and shafts are assembled. but what the hey...just observations...

Maybe it's the picture, but something about the skeg doesn't look right - looks like it might have been repaired. You have to evaluate this one in person - for $600 it could be a good deal.

Hi all.

I ended up buying it. Pictures are funny because in person, the splines are razor sharp and very clean.
Since my upper and lower are still connected (and I wasn't going to break them down in my work clothes), to determine if it was the right gear ratio, I turned the drive shaft on my upper while watching inside the drive where the lowers drive shaft connects to the upper while turning the shaft. When I had 8 complete rotations on the drive shaft of the lower, the prop shaft had 5 complete rotations. My old drive had the exact same number of rotations. However, I was in a rush and will really need to check this again as the difference when doing only 8 rotations is not as pronounced as the difference should I do 16 or more. Will be pissed if I bought something other than a 1.62.

Will know tomorrow definitively.

If you bought an A1G2 lower unit it Will and Must Be 1.62. You know your drive as 1.62 because the upper gear case is 1:1.

I'm not so clear on reverse rotation. To my understanding, early Alphas had to be different internally to be reverse rotation. I believe but am not positive that G2 can be used either way with a linkage change. But again, I am NOT sure of this. I AM, however, sure that any A1G2 lower gear case is 1.62.

Sounds like a good deal. Even if gear ratio is not right you can sell it and make a few bucks.
