Egads, I looked in my dinghy today - 4 eggs

I was ducking under my radar antenna when I found myself leaning backwards over the dinghy. An "explosion" behind me and almost under my head startled me and I saw a duck flying away. When I looked where she came from I saw the four eggs on the canvas dinghy cover.

I don't want to interfere with her duties, but I had planned on putting the aforementioned dinghy in the water to do some work up there. The eggs weren't there Monday. A friend was in the same place and he did not see the eggs. SO ... they are about 3 days old. I read the time to hatch is 28-35 days.

What if we put gloves on, put the eggs inside a large basket and put the basket back where the eggs were originally. Hopefully mommy will still sit on the eggs. Then we could move the basket to the cockpit when we need to put the dinghy down. No???

Suggestions??
 
I don't have a clue as to your answer, but I commend you on your concern for nature.

If they were geese eggs I would have an answer for you...

You might pose your question to CA Dept Fish & Game....... My guess is she will abandon those eggs. But I believe she will move on and lay more eggs someplace else.

Let us know the outcome!
 
Collect the whole set and have an omlette !

I have to confess, my first thought was "Do these eggs float"? But when I looked down at the mom, who was swimming hard in the current to stay in place, and she was looking up at me, well.... besides, my wife taught elementary school for 32 years... any questions?
 
Either 7 or was it 9 eggs now. Immigration is going to hear from me if this keeps up!! :)
Black "down" is covering the eggs and don't want to disturb "mommy". We aren't too sure if she covered them for heat or to protect the eggs from the sun. Never know in Sacramento.
 
I bet they are covered as camouflage more then anything else. Mother nature at her best!
 
I went through this once. There were some Canadian (of course) geese attacking a duck by the creek along the path to our boat one year. So I chased them away while mom sat on the eggs. Eventually the geese won out and mom was left with her nest in ruin. A few days later she laid a mess of eggs under the stairs up to our boat!!! On the dock, no protection just laying there. We heard her rolling them around at night so we knew she was sitting on them.
None hatched. Oh well.

I'm betting you will not see any action here unless she sticks with it. The eggs need to be sat on and rolled around. If she isn't there doing this then Dave's suggestion is probably the best.

Now how do you know that they were Canadian Geese...Did you check them for ID?..They could have been Florida Geese...(g)
 
Why does Mama Goose roll the eggs? What purpose does that serve? Anyone know? Curious minds want to know!
 
I would contact Obama, have your boat considered a wildlife refugee, collect millions, by a bigger boat with the funding, and have a great life.

I commend you for trying to do the right thing. You owe at least a "good try" in cooporating with nature. Let it run it's course.
 
Wayne it was their accent. Strange kinda honk...eh, honk...eh. Not the same as honkey though.

Flut it's early training for shake and bake.
 
It will delay a project of ours for a few weeks, but this gal has been working hard at it. A Mallard attacked her as we were feeding her a few days ago and she swam up under our swim platform. The Mallard looked at my wife and decided to move on. And the Portuguese Water Dog leaning out towards the Mallard probably figured in there somewhere.

The female is doing her part, so I wish her well. I do wish she had picked another place, but we are used to it. We have birds that come back to our house to nest year after year - says the wife. I don't recognize one bird from another most of the time.

We will try to take pictures when they hatch. The grandkids are excited. I hope she sets a world record hatching them.

You of all people should know that they are Canada Geese, not Canadian Geese, (unless they have citizenship).
