Experiences with VC17

I have a 99 Four Winns Vista 258 that has never been bottom painted. Per Mike Ryans advice, I went out today and bought original color VC-17. The bottom is being prepared by Mike and he is also applying Interprotect 2000e. I keep it at a marina may-nov here in Michigan so the bottom was getting very funky....

This vc17 seems to be very highly spoken of. I was VERY lucky to get it for a great price as well; a local marine store had a bottom paint sale this weekend, and if you went into the store you could "roll the dice". Whatever the dice ended up being, you got that percentage off your total bill! I ended up rolling "10" so I got an addtl 10% off my bill :D The VC17 was on sale $39.99/qt. Thats the cheapest ive ever seen it (Not to mention I got 10% off that price as well). Good news is Mike Ryan is a very well respected and knowledgable boat expert that is local to me, so Im very fortunate to have him as a fellow boater as well as boat expert.

So besides that, what is everybodys experience with vc17? What about interprotect 2000e? Any comments?
 
Is the 2000e the barrier coat designed for VC17? I have used VC17 since '05. I would say it has a 1-year life as it comes off easy in the fall clean up. It works fine otherwise. It is supposed to improve performance over traditional bottom paint because of its slipperyness. It is favorite of sailboats out my way.

2000e makes a good base/primer coat and it goes fairly thick. I had thousands of voids(bubbles) in the gelcoat as well as the fiberglass underneath. Personally, I liked it but if Mike recommends it, especially for your area, I'd be good enuff for me.
 
Thanks guys. So the VC17 must be repainted every season?? The interprotect 2000e will prevent blisters from what I understand, correct?

And yes Mike is the man! lol. I dont know what I'd do without him.
 
Orginally I had it put on in '05. I had it redone in '07 and planned on doing it this year but I sold the boat. Out my way most people do it every year.

My other question is about the "original" color. Its copper colored going on but when in the water it gets darker? So what color does the original color VC17 end up being?
 
VC-17 does not need recoated every year. I do it every three. The 2000 barrier cote is the way to go. I use a sponge roller to get that baby smooth feel. works great.
Color depends on what you bought. I use blue. It goes on copper color, and turns blue in a couple of days, after being in the water. Good Luck
 
Yup, Gary is correct. You're going to freak out when you first put on blue bottom paint and it's copper colored! Be careful if you trailer your boat and use this paint. It's so slick, the boat can slide right off the trailer. I'm not kidding about this. A yard in Pittsburgh hauled a 40- ft cruiser that had VC on the bottom. It almost slid off the stands--pretty scarry.
 
Original color will turn dark grey in fresh water and black in salt water.
 
I used the barrier coat, sanded and then painted with several coats of the VC-17. Best thing I have seen for my area and a well kept secret. Easy to use and always looks good because it never really builds up.
