Free Boat...........

One of you guys should take the boat & DONATE it to a real charity to get the deduction on yout 1040.
 
I'm not sure a real charity would take something that old that needs work. I know someone who donated their boat to Habitat for Humanity but it was a relatively new Doral.......they got quite a deduction for that.
 
When I was getting rid of an old sailboat I owned about 5 years ago, none of those charities would take it because it had no title. Older boats don't have titles, and don't need them, but these charities seem to just want to cleanly auction these things off. And not having a title apparently prevents that (even though there is no such thing, and therefore no one should care if there is one.)

So I would be surprised if any of them would take it.
 
Don, I just saw an ad in today's Pennysaver from Kiwanis International located in Riverhead. They say they take donations, adding "no title, no key, no problem". Phone is toll free 866-475-5656. Your friend might want to give them a try.

I once donated a car to the charity heritage for the blind. I could not help but wonder how they were going to use the car. It turns out that the car went to an auction and then the proceeds was given to the charity. I was relieved…..

That may be the best way for him to clear up his dock space.
 
Check with Mystic Sea Port in Ct. They take old vessels like this one.

If it has no title you can't even claim you ever owned it let alone as for a deduction for giving it away? Sure they don't want a gift you can't prove you own?
 
Big PS here...If you ever give a car to a charity make real sure you have removed any registration stickers or inspection stickers and that you get a bill of sale or charity deduction dated & signed. If they tow it & parked it illegaly you will still be liable for any tickets if your stickers are still on the car or it has your plates. Other then this, I have donated two cars and it was well worth the effort taxwise.
 
Art, boats pre-1979 did not have titles, at least in NY they didn't. The registration was the proof of ownership and was marked transferrable. Still would be that way today, unless the boat is documented.

When I finally found a sucker I mean buyer for my sailboat, I transferred it with the reggie. No problem at all.
 
Don, where is the boat located......(hold your laughter plz until the end of the show) but I actually have been missing the woodie days and was thinking about a restoral project. CC would be a good foundation to start from

Don: Tell your friend there is an organization called Songs of Love. It is to help diseased children and they will take his donated boat away for nothing. The phone number is 1-888-909-7664. It was listed in the March 2008 issue of Long Island Boatwing World free newspaper on page 31. His donation would help sick children and that's a great thing. [:-thumbu]
