Fuel problem puzzle SOLVED

Good question; leaving rod in place, removing mechanical pump, installing cover plate. Installing new switch and electric pump.

As to why rod remained stuck is still a mystery, didn't want to tear motor down enough to remove it.
 
So the rod was stuck in the extended position and would not return? Maybe lapping it and putting it back in with some engine oil would have done the trick?

Otherwise if stuck the other way this is driven by the cam correct? That means the cam lobe wore through or chunked?

Were you able to remove the pushrod?
 
Not remove, just move it very little. The rod doesn't move when cranking. Figured it was better to go electric.. Yes, cam lobe must have worn through.
 
Man oh man. I would be looking to do an oil analysis on that engine as you might have "on going" failure. If that cam lobe is worn, you have to wonder about the rest of them. If you got a deteriorating cam, you got metal going all over that engine. It does not get better, it accelerates once the hardening on the cam has been penetrated. If you can't get that push rod removed from the worn cam lobe it is going to sit there and make more metal. It is likely an electric pump will buy you some time and mask a serious in progress mechanical failure. Have you pulled apart the oil filter and ran a magnet over the media?
 
No, but sounds like a good idea. Wonder why the mechanic didn't mention oil analysis? He expressed no concern about why cam lobe failed..

IIRC the rod has no return spring. That is in the pump. The rod will naturally not follow the cam unless something pushes it up, gravity will normally allow it to fall but it can get stuck in the down position after the pump is removed. I would not worry about the rod wearing or interfering with the cam but again IIRC there may be a away to remove it. A couple of oil changes would not hurt then just enjoy your electric pump.
 
That's reassuring. Scheduled oil analysis for Friday, just to be sure.
