Got a sick feeling...Rot?

I have an 186CC Cape Craft.

Slowly but surely I have been working on this boat and motor keeping it running and adding the personal touches that make it work for the fishing and shrimping that I do.

Last weekend I went to mount a new transome mount transducer for a new depth/fish finder.

I drilled into the transome with a small 1/8th bit and as soon as I got past the glass, the bit went all the way in to the chuck. As I pulled the bit out, I could see, dark damp wood. Although this was at the very bottom of the transome, I am guessing that the entire transome is probably rotted inside.

So the question is: Is it even worth trying to fix and if so, where do I start? I am betting that this is beyond me. Maybe not physically, but the time and tools etc would probably make this something that I'd get a pro to do. But what could this cost?

I have to go through up now... just writing this has made me sick all over again.

Is there any hope?
 
I have seen a number of different ways to fix that, the simplest is to cut the top off, remove the rotten wood and pour a product in the cavity that will replace the wood. Of course now that someone needs to know, I don't remember what the name of the product is, but I assume an internet search will turn it up.

I will see what I can do to get some pictures, though not sure what to take pictures of. At the moment its all intact. The only way I knew there was a problem was by drilling into it to mount the transducer.

Thanks for your input all. The seacast looks like it is probably just what I need. Although I am not sure about cutting off the top of the transom. Yikes! This will need some extensive research.

I guess the other question here is, since this is a trailered boat and the summer is here, what is the danger in holding off on doing anything until the fall when I will not be taking the boat out regularly? The darn thing is running great now with the exception of this.

If an outboard it will be fine until the motor falls off. If an I/O and rotten in the middle they will generally start a depression under the rubber gasket that seals the water out. You should see it start to leak an be able to react since you trailer it.
 
Not all boats can use seacast.

Need a lot more info on your boat. Pics would help. Close ups of inside transom at the bilge plug area. Pics on the inner transom

I can't believe I didn't point out... Its an outboard the transome is about 2" thick where the motor (Merc 100) mounts.

I have tried pushing on it as much as possible by hand and get no "give" so its not like the wood is gone, its just wet.

I'll have to get a better camera, pics don't show up with a hoot.

Appreciate the feedback... I'll get some pics somehow
