Thanks to you guys telling me what the stuff inside the seam of my cover was called, I now have 40' of new new bungee cord. Now my question is how do I seal it? The boat shop I got it at burnt the end like you would with nylon but the rubber melted and has stayed sticky so I need to trim that off and then do something else. There will be a knot at the ends to stop it from going through the grommet but I still need to seal it. I was thinking of some liquid electrical tape but have never used the stuff and didn't know if it totally dried and stayed clean. Also thought of using some regular black electrical tape but that seems kind of novice so I thought I'd check with the experts.

Any suggestions?

thanks!

The marine supply sells a whipping sealer, that I have always felt is liquid elect. tape((only clear), It comes in similar can, and has a brush. Other way would be a hot knife and cut it where you wish. That will seal it wewthout that glob of burnt rubber. 303 fabric guard ( used in canvas) will seal the outer wrap, if moisture is any concern. Spay cord, and allow to dry.
I also use elect. shrink tape on the ends of my lines, just and " or so, which helps me to identify the bitter end and seals the end off. That you can get in the elect. dept at marine store.

huh ok maybe i will try the liquid electrical tape. we happen to have some due to an exhaust system change on the miata. that's a good tip about the 303. i have the spray from doing the cover so i'll hit the cord too.

I've heated bungee cord a hundred times; never had the exposed rubber stay sticky ! You may want to try heat shrink tubing ?

1) slide a "slightly snug" piece of heat shrink over the cord.

2) stretch the cord.

3) while cord is stretched, shrink the heat shrink tubing.

4) Let cord relax.

5) Cut the cord at the mid-point of the now shrunken heat shrink.

This leaves both the new cut off piece with a nicely finished end, and as a bonus, the loose end of the "roll" now is neatly finished as well.
