We're looking into taking a trip up the Hudson river again this year. Last year we went from Glen Cove, Long Island to Newburgh in a single day. On Day 2 we explored up to Poughkeepsie and then back to Newburgh. On day 3 we traveled from Newburgh back home. This year we'd like to make it up to the Kingston / Roundout area and spend a little more time getting there and back. I was thinking about a first overnight somewhere around Cold Spring. Day 2 would bring us to Kingston, where we'd stay overnight in the Rondout Creek. Day 3 we'd explore the Rondout Creek area and again over night there. Day 4 would take us back to the Cold Spring area for an overnight and Day 5 would take us from Cold Spring back to Glen Cove. Any comments or recommendations on the itinerary and/or marinas (wife enjoys a pool at the marinas)? would also love to meet up with some of the boatersed folks on our trip.

IIRC Cold Springs has a maximum size limit of 30 feet. Change Cold Springs to Haverstraw/Stony Point area and i think you'll have a doable trip.

The only pool in Kingston is at the Rondout Yacht Basin. I would also suggest, since you're going to spend the day there, to take the slow cruise up the creek (or use the dinghy!) and see the sights. Depending on the weekend we'll be either at the "beach" (a sandbar nearly 3 miles in from the lighthouse) or hanging out at the Anchorage Marina which is near the head of navigation. We've always got extra beers handy, either to give you (if you visit) or throw at you (if you pass us by [:-mischievous]). Seriously, its a lot of fun...

Cold Spring is a tough town to overnight in, but a couple of miles north is Newburgh with a few choices to tie up for the night. Or if you don't get that far, of course the many Haverstraw marinas will be available just a few miles south. And Kingston is about 3 hours north at a slow cruising speed from Haverstraw, less than 2 hours from Newburgh...

rommer - are there any marinas for transients at stony point?

pete - sounds like roundout yacht basin it is (gotta keep the boss happy). would love to meet up with you while we're there.

Bruce, how did you come up with Cold Spring as a place to stay? I would say stop either in the Haverstraw area or come up to Newburgh/New Hamburg. We don't have amenities (you do get electric & water) at White's but it would be pretty cheap and its protected, Newburgh has no break waters. From us Kingston is another hour fifteen to hour forty five minutes depending on cruise speed and how much you want to enjoy the scenery. Give a holler when you are coming.

You could also stop in Tarrytown and have a great dinner. Then continue on. The Rondout YB is the best place on the creek, and taxis will come take you to the city if you like. Or dink over (much better).

Sure, Stony Point Bay Marina has a nice pool, small restaurant and great people on the docks. Also, Patsy's Bay, (pool & snack bar) and Minnescogo, (Yacht Club, fuel). You also have Haverstraw Marina, (pool, fuel, MAYBE a restaurant as it is under construction) about 2 miles south.

You can also hail most of us on channel 69 and hook up with at a local anchorage spot.

(Penny Bridge is also in Stony Point but not sure if they do transients so I'll let others speak up about them. Although if you need service on your trip they are the best!)

Hi Bruce, Nice to hear your coming up are way again! I would stay away from cold spring for an overnight. Haverstraw is the way to go. Deep water slips! I also agree with the Roundout Yacht Basin. If you let me know in advance maybe we could meet up at one of the anchorage areas.

Pennybridge is usually full, no transient slips

Roundout is a great destination. If you have a dink, take it across the creek, you'll pass the public docks on the way in...there's a dink-dock right there. You'll have quite a variety of restaurants to chose from. We did an "adults only" cruise last year, had dinner at the Steel House, drinks and music at Mariners and brunch at some sort of spanish restaurant the next morning. It was a great trip.

If you have extra time and want to add a couple of days, consider Catskill Creek up river.

I kinda thought that Mike but wasn't sure. Do they rent out your slip when you go on vacation?

No they don't, but I always let them know so that they can use it for service boats.

Bruce, definitely let us know when you're coming. It would be great to link up...

The other ROs have shared some good info too - I didn't know that Stony Point Bay Marina and Patsy's Bay had pools. Also, George mentioned New Hamburg - White's Marina would be an excellent place to stay for the night, although there are few amenities there. It is a nice protected harbor...

The shame of Cold Spring is that it WOULD be a wonderful place to explore, but for some reason they just seem to hate boaters there. So while there's a great looking town dock, you can't tie a boat up to it. IMHO the hippie artists up there probably hate us "rich" boaters for all our contributions to Global Warming or something. Which is stupid, because us boaters have the money, and the inclination, to stop by and patronize all those art and antique shops owned by all those hippies. It would seem to be a symbiotic relationship, but it has never developed. Cold Spring, for all its virtues, remains a great place to go by car, but a lousy place to go by boat...

guys - thanks for your suggestions and i'll check into them. we don't want to go all the way to newburgh on the first day because we did that last year and it was a bit much on the admiral. cold spring seemed logical because it looks to be about half way to roundout creek. it sounds like stony pt may be a decent choice if it's got a pool to keep the admiral happy. we've got a dink, so exploring will be fun. i'll definitely let you guys know when we're coming as our plans solidify. first, i've got to hoodwink, i mean convince, my folks to look after the rug rats for a few days. they're 15 months old and 2 weeks old at this point and won't be making the trip with us (at least not this year).

al - glad you chimed in. i already told the admiral we're meeting up with you. good thing i finally told you. you still in the verplanck area?

walshie - did the spanish restaurant serve mexican food or spanish food (ie from spain)?

Btoran;

"Google" Haverstraw Marina. It should have what you are looking for, and offers deep water access.]

They are truly set up for transients.

Depending upon the weekend, we may have room accross the river at Courtlandt Yacht Club - pool, snack bar (which serves breakfast on weekends).

Directly accros the river from the Stony Point Lighthouse.

$0.02.

Hey Bruce,

I look forward to it! Im still at Viking Boat Yard in Verplank. I didnt think about the Courtland Yacht Club, there right next door to me. They have a very nice pool area and snack bar there. I have friends there if you would like me to check on some information for you, id be glad to make a call.

al - i'll give them a call, as well as the other marinas mentioned.

al - i couldn't find a webpage for cortland yacht club. do you know of one or their phone number? thanks.

btoran, sounds like you got good advice above to me but, cold spring is a good place to stop for breakfast, lunch ,dinner, they offer a free dock for that, just remember to put out extra fenders the docks have connecting bolts that stick out far enough to gouge your hull & there is no protection from wakes or tug and barge traffic . i think you would be happy with haverstraw or stony point as well newburgh has lots of good resturants & has really improved over the past few years but no pool.best whishes on your trip ! BTW I just joined the site a coupple days ago & wanted to say hi to all, look forward to sharing info with the hrcc ,i've been boating on the hudson & greater new york area for 25 plus years.............john f
