hydraulic cylinders on a hatch

Anyone know if it is required/advisable for safety reasons to use two hydraulic cylinders on a hatch?

We have a hatch to exit from the Salon onto the sundeck. Hatch is teak, heavy and was always a pain to open from the inside. As an experiment I purchased and installed a single Atwood 30# hydraulic cylinder on the hatch. Now it works exactly as I would like...Hatch does not open by itself when I unhook the locks, but it slowly opens by itself with a gentle push. Suppose I could install two 15# cylinders and achieve the same result, but if only one is really needed, then I prefer to stay with one.

Guess I am asking what happens if the cylinder fails, will hatch come crashing down. Or do these cylinders normally fail in a more gradual fashion?

Thanks,
Mike
