Sadly, we took our last boat ride yesterday from Glen Cove to East Rockaway for the winter. A really beautiful ride.

Spent today off-loading a season's worth of stuff in preparation for getting hauled. A relatively trouble free season after a questionable start but a list of improvements to do this winter.

We had a great season visiting Mystic, Block, Montauk, Milford a few times, Atlantic City and Liberty Landing last week in addition to being on the hook in Oyster Bay.

This is early for us but too much going on over the next month to make it worthwhile to keep her in. So on to daydreaming about next season.... :-)
 
We took our center console out today on the trailer and it's already winterized. Tues. the mechanic will change the water pump, finish up a few little things and shrink wrap it. Now just waiting for the barge to come down the canal and haul the bowrider and floating dock into our yard for the winter. I think this is the first time I sat down today as I'm writing this. Oh well, gonna be a long winter :(

How much does it cost for the barge thingy?

It cost a little under $300 to haul our 18' boat and our dock with the ramp. I think it depends on how big the boat is too but I'm not sure. It does give us peace of mind knowing there's nothing in the canal for the winter though.
 
Radio Waves is pretty much done for the season also as we have a few other planed activities. This past weekend we had a great last 2 days at Kismet and a very slow ride back to the LIYC. Already beginning to think back on all the trips we took this year. I am happy to have a ton of pictures. The goods news is we are keeping her in the water for the winter as we did last year. Although we do a full winterization and do not have all the comforts of a commissioned boat, it really extends our boating season for a place to hang out. We have the LIYC club house open for activities during the winter months. So until it gets ridiculously cold like last February, we will still stay on board for the night after a dinner or some get together.

In order to extend the season somewhat, we bought a Thetford “Deluxe” Port-A-Potty. It actually fits inside my head area, but a bit tight. We then bought Caframo heaters which work pretty well. Since the cockpit and salon fridges are shutdown, coolers are in their place for beer / sodas etc., not so much to keep stuff cold but to protect from freezing or contain the mess if they do freeze and pop.

It’s still sad knowing we are not cruising until April, but I sure will settle for my in water option.

LOL....

Changed boat yard to do my work plus will do some of it myself. But at least I know how to get rid of the pink stain. Basically do a little cleaning and let the sun do the rest.
 
Brad......use compressed air......... cheaper than the pink & tastes better too

We are about done also...maybe one more weekend....then its a wrap.
 
Pink never tastes good,especialy in older models, but is something we think we have to do. Much better to get you pipe(s) blown out.

Walter i think its a requirement... AS for the pipes... it gets harder and harder to get done...

My compressor stopped blowing a long time ago ...

Rob........ you need to get a foreign built compressor......... they blow for a longer period of time and need less maintainance. I have one made in Italy....50 years ago....and still works. The only requirement is that you use a ridgid pipe......not a flex pipe.

As far as the pink.........it all smells the same....once you open it.
 
I am familiar with both theories of winterization, but I see more people, a least at my marina, using the pink stuff (non-tox) antifreeze. It does make sense to blow the system out, but the liquid method has been working for me. In the spring I do a water system commission that I never had a problem with foul taste or odor. But I don’t drink the water out of my water tank anyway, just dishes and maybe brushing the teeth when too lazy to grab a bottle of water.

Rob, compressors need to be nurtured, and have a good lube job from time to time. They work better when they build up the pressure slowly. But can take high pressure if let to run free of hoses and uninhibited for a bit. If that does not work, new rings may be in order…

I disagree on the smell... They so dont all smell the same,,,, I recall vividly opening a new container and loosing the cap.... I can still smell it .... I think that container was damaged from day one ... Was thinking of suing the manufacturer... But they expired. I mean went out of bussiness..

yes..........be very careful with new containers. They have a smell of their own.
 
Have you ever had the pink stuff go bad, is there a shelf life ? Also, have you seen many variations of the pink stuff?. Do you prefer to get your pink stuff from a full service place or a discount place?

How bout that purple stuff, do you think it is much better than that pink stuff?

I've seen the pink stuff in white or brown containers. It all looks the same to me.

I'd never do the purple stuff.....it may just be the pink ....gone bad...or with an additive in it!
 
No matter what color container it is guys, they all tend to ooze a bit when you open them, especially the new ones. So the best place to open them is generally in the shower this way you can wash the ooze away!! [}}:-|>>]
 
The shower won’t work for me; I usually winterize my sump first. I clean all the goo off of the strainer and around the pump then pour the pink stuff in and let it run though the pipes. Then I pour the rest down the shower so the pump kicks in again.

Guys, just trying to bring this back to winterizing reality not fantasy…

P.S.

What’s wrong with a little ooze ?, that’s a tell tale sign that you are handling things correctly. ;)
 
yup....good point....real important to make the shower pump run out some pink.....so you protect outboard of the check valve.

Same with the engine room bilge pumps.
