I would like some suggestions on redoing the interior of my boat.

I have a 19ft open bow 1978 sea ray. I need new seats in the rear of the boat. the current set up is with a pair of back to back lounges(one serving as the drivers seat) and then in the very back are 2 seats seperated by a large engine cover.

Option 1 Recover the seats that are in the boat and replace the back to back lounges

Option 2 Replace everything and switch the back to back seats to captains chairs then remove the lage engine cover and put in a large bench seat then fabricate a large sundeck over the engine. This option is how boats built today seem to be configured.

I would like to do option 2 but would apprecite any thouhgts about my options.

I also would like to do some of the work myself so I was thinking about using some of the premade pontoon furniture.

I used to have a cuddy configured similar to yours. I found that after I went to a larger boat, I really missed back to back style seats. They were perfect for fishing! We made a table to fit between the two jump seats in back which came in very handy. Maybe you could fit a reversible table/lounge item. I've seen other boats with a capn chair and it does free up a lot of floor spece, but takes away from storage. There are always trade offs.......

My thought was that most passengers like to ride in the bow and no one ever rides backwards in the back to back seats so that is what got me thinking. Plus my friend who has a 06 4winns is set up like what I was thinking.

Thanks for the reply

It all depends on how you use your boat. When I had the cuddy, it was usually just my SO and I. We did a lot of anchoring/fishing/spending the night on the boat. If you've got a group on board, it is a whole different scene!

I had exactly the same questions a few months ago. I considered the back bench in front of the engine box, but that really reduces floor space! Here's what I am in the process of doing starting with exactly what you have on a 19'.

I replaced the driver's side B-2-B lounge with a nice captain's chair - adjustable height and forward/backwards for when the kids drive. Then. kind of behind the captain's chair (new open space) we're putting a removable rectangular table with a FLUSH-mounted stand so it can be removed and notstub toes. Then, for the Jump seat on that same side I'm making kid of a lounge, maybe 2 1/2 seats long with the back right where it was. The table will sit in front of this a bit when in. The other side I just re-did the foam cushions in the existing lounge and jump seats - no new configuration. It's nice to have a TON of seating when you lay that lounge open - like when we're hanging out eating. I didn't want to lose that seating by putting in another Captains chair.

Here's a link to a similar table on eBay. Auction is over, but it shows the idea.

I may put a table mount in the bow also - easy to do and provides options. I'll follow this thread to see what others say. Mine is still torn apart so i can change plans if needed. I already bought everything I need though as i saw deals on ebay for what I wanted.

Thanks guys. A table would be low on my priorities and seating as well as areas to layout would be higher on the list. It seems that when I had others on the boat this summer they would mostly go to the bow and then one person next to me and maybe one more person in the remaining 4 seats in the back. That again is what is giving me this idea. My biggest concern is buying the seats i would want and if I have enough room to do what i am thinking. I am in the process of trying to get in to the storage area to get some pics of the boat and measurements. I appreciate the interest you have had and your experience is worth a lot to me.

drpete: in case you are unfamilar with Boatfix they have all kinds of seats here http://www.boatfix.com/catalog/397.pdf
prices and service is usually great. for some reason I didnt see the B2B type I am sure I have seen them there though.

I will use boat fix any time I can.

I did see this in their catalog. Thanks. One of the others that I am considering is a company that makes them custom. For example they will make a bench that would be any length that I want vs being limited to the 27 inch and 36 inch. Trust me though I will save the money if I dont need to go custom. I am also wondering if any one can vouch for the quality of seating made by the Wise company.

You know, that's a lot of work and cost for a 30 yr. old 19' BR. If you buy decent captains chairs ($200 ea.) and a bench ($400) then add a sundeck, you're investing serious cash for what the boat is worth. I'm not saying it's a bad idea to do so, just seems you might be better off finding a boat with the layout you want and selling that one. Runabouts that age can't be too expensive to buy with the other layout.

Are your canvas pieces in good shape? Those cost a ton also, again, compared to the boat's value.

I think the type of layout you want is/was called "sports seating" by some brands.

Good luck though, I'll be watching to see what you get done on this.

You are correct about the age. The hours are low and She runs real good(for Now) and I only paid 600 dollars for it. So it is paid for. I would bet I could sell it for 2000 in the spring because it is in good shape. Now with the up grades I am thinking about maybe 3500. The problem is that I probably couldnt buy what i want for 3500. As well as the fact that I know this boat.

I do not have any of the canvas for this boat. That is a big bummer so I just keep a cover on it all of the time.

Overall I understand where your coming from and I Since I only have 600 invested in the boat I dont mind puttin another 1000 in to it. Maybe smart maybe not.

Pete,

I have a 26' that had a engine cover. I removed the cover and two side seats. I built a 3 section bench w/ a removable front at the engine.

I padded the kick panels, carpeted the top and am having a padded top made.

Although it did reduce floor space, storage & sitting area more then made up for it.

do you have any photos don? I still need to get my measurements, hopefuly tomorrow.

also interested in this conversion, as I have the same situation and idea.

GGR

I am in the process right now. I am just about ready to order seats I am just waiting on color samples. If you care to shar any ideas please feel free.

are you going to build a platform for the rear seat/engine hatch? I was looking at the space I have and I think it would be tight without both sides being captains chairs. I have a 18' Reinell.
I want to do this, because I think I could get more versatility out of the boat. I was thinking that the new rear seat/ engin cover would also double as a sun lounge for the wife and kids, but maybe i could install a flush mount pole holder on it, and use it as a fishing platform as well.

What seats are you buying now?

yes I think Ill end up with a 46 to 48 in sundeck over the engine then i will have a 62 inch bench seat from veada then 2 captains chairs in matching vinyl. On the ends of the bench Ill have to customize 2 ends/cup holders to finish it off. I have gone round and round about what to make the sundeck out of and how to support it. I dont want to add 300 pds to the boat. I want to use treated plywood but that stuff warps so much. Ill probably end up using that and keep the warpage down using bracing underneath.

I too am remodeling the boat.. I have a 75 MFG super caprice 17, I bought it last year for 800 bucks... the lower unit needed a rebuild... (electric shift) anyways, my engine cover didn't have the cupholder console on it... made a new one.. I also bought it with the rear facing seats out... previous owner(s) must have taken them out... I built a back for them and am going to put 2 square coolers behind them on each side.. one for drinks and one for fish! A friend built me 2 rod holders(flush mount) out of stainless steel... he's an excellent welder.. and all the vinyl just needed some cleaning... and the stitching on them was ripped apart, so I took them into my shop and repaired them... (I was Survival Equipment in the Air Force.. I learned to sew and re-upholster...) I also built a center console for the driver and passenger under the dash with built in cupholders and mounted a marine radio there... anyone wanna see pics let me know...

okay.... here is what I have... not sure what else to do.... the only newest thing to add was I bought white cupholder inserts and put them in the consoles... hope you like it!
