Has anyone put VC-17M on thier boat bottom without a primer such as interprotect or VCtar and had the paint stay on the bottom after a season in the water?
Yes, our last boat was new in '05 and a local yard sanded the bottom and put vc17 on direct. That first coat went two seasons (lake erie) before I had it it redone. Around here most guys redo vc17 every year.
Thanks for the info Niles. We boat on Lake Michigan. I had done by previous boat with VC-17 after doing the Interprotect system right before I sold it. Talking with the current owner they never touched the bottom since they bought it 4 years ago, the paint held up. I put the paint on within the recommended time frame so it bonded with the interprotect. My current boat has a solid glass bottom in good condition so I wanted to just paint it and be done with it for the season.
Regarding the Zebras - We're on Lake Erie. '08 was the first year I noticed the little buggers beginning to find homes on the hull attachments. Particularly on the trim tab crevice where it meets the hinge area. Made a note to check/clear ALL intakes each spring before splashing (so they don't cause me a real headache underway).
Same here in central Lake Erie. I had them in the trim tab hinges and they were all over an old transom mount transducer I had. Overall they weren't too bad.
