July on the Hudson?

How's Kingston for the 4th of July?
Marinas? Distance to shops restaurants etc.?

Kingston is great for the 4th. but you will need to book early as it fills up quick.

You have two options.. Town Dock which is right in the center of everything.. (shops, resturants, fireworks, etc.)

or Roundout Creek which which is a nice marina with a pool and a short dingy ride to the town docks.
 
A short dingy ride to the Town Docks? I don't have a dingy. Any other way to get there? Walk? Rent a car?
Is "Roundout Creek" the actual name of the Marina?
 
You can walk. About a 15-20 minutes.

Rondout yacht Basin

The actual July 4th celebration in Kingston is usually the weekend before the 4th.
 
BTW there are plenty of places to go on the Rondout at any time during the summer. Rondout Yacht Basin is certainly the best and biggest marina, but there are about half a dozen others who will accomodate you if space is tight at the Town Dock or the Yacht Basin. And if you don't mind the long ride at slow speed, the creek winds its way some 2 and a half miles further inland than the town of Kingston. There is a large bight near the end of the navigable portion of the creek where you can anchor out and go swimming, or raft up with others. And adjacent marinas such as Lou's or the Anchorage (where my boats are) are nice, folksy places where you'll meet nice people, there's food and provisions nearby and some of us are even nice enough to drive you into town if you need/want something more :)...
 
Yes the weekend before the 4th is when the fireworks occur up here. Plan on staying Monday since the fireworks are on a Sunday. Rondout Yacht Basin (RYB) is at 845-331-7061. Reserve.
Kgn town docks are great that weekend, reserve. The walk to town from the RYB is a hike up hill and down again use Google Map or Google Earth to check it out. You will probably work off a meal doing it from the marina to town and back.
Taxis are available. RYB has a pool.
 
That means the Fireworks display will be on the 29th which won't work for me. Admiral's last day of work is the 26th leaving me just 3 days to get there which would be pushing it. Actually I'm sure I can maker it in 3 days but it's a boat and anything can happen. Surely there must be things going on somewhere else closeby for the 4th?
 
From Poughkeepsie to West Point there will be plenty of fireworks right through that weekend, finding a place to stay I would think will be a bigger problem for you than finding activities. And if $80/night is on the high end don't even think about going down around NYC. But check Hyde Park Marina, they will surely have transient room.
 
Yeah, there are plenty of festivities going on in the Hudson Valley that weekend. Its just that Kingston does the fireworks the week before but other communities do 'em that weekend...

Where is home port, BTW???

I sent an E-Mail to Rondout Yact Basin late last night regarding reservations for the 3rd 4th and 5th. After the 5th we'll probably head further south and who knows where we'll end up. I'm planning on being gone for about about three weeks (give or take) so time and destination are really not important.
 
Well....I just checked my E-Mail and got it back undelivered. Says the recipients Mailbox is full. Nobody there at this time of year?
 
That would be the case. Leave phone mail, Cheryl will most likely get back to you. I have to agree with you taking 3 from the west end of Oneida. 'Bout the same from here to there for us. Perhaps 2 if you push hard but there is a chance of mutiny with that.
 
When we went to Lake Champlain a few years ago I made The Champlain Hudson Erie Junction in two days......It wasn't bad but it was also during mid-week. I'm sure the traffic will be alot different traveling on a weekend so it'll probably take at least three days. (long waits at Locks etc.)
I'll keep trying to get hold of the people at Rondout today and hopefully something will develope
 
I just spent about an hour searching the internet for some sort of a detailed guide for the Hudson. So many out there yet none seem to be solely for the Hudson but instead also encompass the Champlain Canal and Lake Champlain and seem to concentrate more on that section. The Champlain Canal etc. is covered in the New York State Canals Guidebook and I'm really not interested in that. Can anyone recommend one that concentrates on information and maps etc. of JUST the Hudson?

COOL! I've always wanted to visit your homeport. We almost got there with the Glastron a couple of years ago when we went to the State Fair, but bad weather shortened our trip. We were going to put our boat in at the County Park near I-81 and travel along the canal to the West towards Baldwinsville and Cross Lake. We did put in at Onondaga Lake Park instead and went to Cross Lake and back over 3 days, but it wasn't as ambitious as our original agenda...

We've been up the Erie as far as Sylvan Beach in the big boat. That's a great trip and we had a blast a few years ago when we did it...
 
Is Kingston's fireworks always the weekend before the Fourth? It's sure help me plan -- the city's website didn't have anything.
