Was running when I left Jersey.
Got home and it was off.
Code on panel was UU.
Now it just cranks and won't turn over.
Strainer is clear and water is flowing from strainer.

Impeller?
Air in Fuel?
Clogged Filer?

Other Ideas?

Thanks!

Accordingto the service manual, UU indicates an undervoltage condition. Is there a load on the generator when you try to start? The manual suggests reducing the load and trying again. However, this suggests to me that the engine starts enough to sense the voltage coming from the voltage regulator.

Does it start at all and then cut out?

There are also some fuses that will prevent starting.

No load at start up.
It just cranks and never starts.
Does t keep getting a uu code. That is code on display when I went down to see why it shutdown.
Now it just cranks and won't turn over
No code. And no noise other than it cranking.

OK, dumb question....do you have enough fuel in your tank? On my last boat, the fuel pick up hose for the Genset was fairly short. If my tank got down to 1/3 full, the Genset fuel Line was sucking air.

Plenty of fuel. Filled up in jersey. Tanks are 3/4 full and I have run them as low as 1/4 with no issues.

Since there is no ignition, and it is cranky, I would have to think it is a lack of fuel issue. Filter checked? No one inadvertanly shut the fuel flow off?

No valve to shut off fuel for genset.
I am going to check fuel filters.
Just not sure if I just replace them.
also probably should check fuses.
I just read there is a fuse that controls the fuel pump which is electric.
i guess I can remove filter and hit pump and see if it pulls fuel.

"cranks but won't turn over"? Do you mean cranks but won't fire or start? Cranks to most means is turning over.

Hi Dave
Check your oil and see if there is an online circuit breaker. These are the easy ones.

Good luck,
Billy K.

Cranks and won't fire or start.
What do you call when you hit start and unit tries to starts but doesn't fire up?
No ignitiion or compression noise, just trying to start but not starting.
I call that cranking but not starting.

Close seacock when cranking

Gas or diesel?

Spins but won't fire and run?

Ok I guess it's diesel
Spins but no fire up is fuel
Solenoid not opening because of error code is suspect
Can you reset error once or open solinoid?

Yeah Spins or Cranks, but no fire or start.
I have to check again but normally when I hit the on button I hear a whine noise which is fuel pump pumping fuel and I don't think I heard that.
Like I said, i read last night there is a fuse that controls the electric fuel pump and I wonder if that is cooked.

The error code when I went down was a UU which is under voltage. But that could be assymptomatic from the fact that it lost compression and power dropped. I read where UU pops up for lots of things including bad impeller, though I would think that is normally LOC or Loss of Coolant. I have gotten that when weed blocks intake.

I am gonna check fuses, then work my way back thru the fuel filters. I want to see if I have a fuel line clog.

Not sure what you mean open solenoid?

The error code resets when you hit the red button and go back to Auto mode. So its all reset. But they won't start if issue is not fixed.

yes its diesel and since there is not much else too these, it almost seems like it would have to be fuel related!

I suggest to check fuel filters, and prime fuel lines. Check fuel pump Too. 99% code UU is for lack of fuel. Engine not getting enough fuel.

When people say check the fuel filter, what exactly am I looking for?
I have all UL rated filters which have solid bowls, so when I spin off bowl, I will see some crap sometimes.
Genny has an external racor first in line then a Smaller Racor mounted on the Genny itself.
No issue replacing them, but how would I know they are clogged or do you just change them and hope that's it?
I do plan to work backwards from Genny checking fuses, breakers, then engine mounted filter.

Thanks!

Just crack while you loosen a fuel line to see if fuel is present. If so filters and pump are probably OK to start, perhaps not run under load but you don't need much fuel to idle.
Fuel solenoid controls fuel, it is how the engine is shut down. Looks like a starter solenoid probably attached to the injection pump.

All, keep in mind that Dave's generator is diesel, not gas. simply having fuel present will not work. Diesel fuel systems operate at very high pressure to atomize the fuel, and facilitate combustion. Diesel injectors will not open below a certain pressure. Dave, start with all the fuses, but i believe you should have a low and high pressure pump. my bet would be on the high pressure pump if you have that type of setup. good luck and i hope you find a solution without too much digging.

It s very rare for a diesel Genset to simply shut down because of a fuel filter issue. It will usually give you some warning like stumbling when a heavy load is started, hunting, etc.

While it doesn't hurt to change the racor and the secondary filter (mounted on the engine), you will also bring air in the system which may make whatever the problem simply worst.

You shoudo have a manual for that genny with a troubleshooting section which should describe the tourblesshoting steps for that code and these symptoms incl. fuses.
Most diesels have an electric lift pump then a high pressure injection pump, normally mechanical not electric so no fuse

As others have mentioned, if you need to crank for more than 30 seconds you must close teh seacock otherwise you will fill the water lift muffler and then flood th engine.

Not familiar with those Kohlers so can be more specific... But again the manual is where you want to start.

I took the top off of Racor to inspect earlier this year and would not start after that. After priming about 4 times it fired up. I certainly would try priming several times to see if that works.

This unit has no way to prime.
Mechanic told me you hit start but don't let it start.
Every time you hit start fuel pump runs.
Considering I have tried starting it a few times, if pump was pumping, then there would be more than enough fuel in there.
There is also no bleeder on the unit.
He said it is designed to release the air.

Like I said I have to check fuel pump is going on first, that could be faulty pump or fuse.

It was running, don't know if it was hunting. It was running under load and we were all up on bridge. When we got back to dock, it was off with Under Voltage Fault and clearing fault it wouldn't restart. So my theory is it starved for fuel and shutdown. Could be air in line, not sure. How did it get air? Nothing changed. I still feel fuel pump is not providing fuel.

And yes it's Diesel!!!
