I called the lock master and she said the locks close at 7:50am and open again at 1:30pm tomorrow. She said its easiest to lock through or within 30-40 minutes after opening. How long would you estimate it will take from West Hampton Beach to the locks? I know it takes me 2hrs to hit WHB from Lindy. I figure, as long as I make it there before 2pm, I won't have a problem. If the locks open at 1:30, remember that is an estimate, they do not physically open the locks, they are tidal driven, with maybe a little manual help. Winds and other factors could change the time, but not that significantly, maybe 15-20 minutes difference.
If you want to lock though which on a weekday should be easy then get there any time they are closed. If they are just about to open, I would wait. I usually call if I see the red light and had expected them to open.
From Babylon it takes me 2hr’s to WHB and then another hour to the locks because of the no wake areas going through Quogue. Just make sure when you pass under the Ponquogue bridge you hang the left at the change buoy and not head for the CG station.

If you review what I wrote in the sticky about traversing the canal you'll see the info that I've put together from my experiences with the canal both with the gates open and closed. My marina is right off the canal and do ask people to slow down prior to entering the canal when the current is moving. There's a fish cleaning station at the end of my dock and I've been tossed about as a large boat powers up before they get into the cement walls of the canal. Remember that your wake is tossing boats around in the marinas just south of the canal so I do ask boats to slow down. Once you are in the canal please stay on your power to be safe. There's also a small entrance to Tidewaters Restaurant that you need to keep an eye on as there may be boats transiting while you are coming thru. Not a large margin for error for sure when the current's moving hard.

Yes, the current runs slow just after opening and before closing. During the middle, boy that current can really move. I have a 24' cc and have no problem other than staying on the throttle and kicking up a wake...the canal closes as the incoming tide starts from Shinnecock Bay. The Peconic Bays are higher than Shinnecock and if the gates didn't close then there would always be a current flowing from the Peconics to Shinnecock.

I have a question regarding John C's posting on 7/27 (sites for Buoy stations), great information!
I've made a number of ocean runs to Block and Montauk and I always check wave height, wind speed and direction but not wave intervals. I've had nice rides in 2ft to 3ft waves and sloppy rides and all based on wave intervals.
I went to the Station 44025 site today and it listed Dominant Wave Period (DPD) 7.0 seconds and Average Period (APD)5.6 seconds.
For those who use this information, what do you look at? Dominant or Average and what is a good interval verses a sloppy interval in seconds?

I tend to go by the average, but never looked into it too closely. Here's the description from the NOAA site -
DPD Dominant wave period (seconds) is the period with the maximum wave energy. See the Wave Measurements section.
APD Average wave period (seconds) of all waves during the 20-minute period. See the Wave Measurements section.
