So i made it a all the way back to from Fire Island. I come off plane and when i go to give it a little throttle i get a vibration. I idle into the marina up to my slip. As soon as i put the port engine in reverse i hear a pop. Soon after i notice something wasn't right when trying to swing the stern around. I finally got her in to the slip with one engine despite wind and current. I checked the shaft and saw it was spinning but not generating any thrust. I have a good idea where the prop is but no way I'm going into that water after that sewage spill.

Join the club, snapped a shaft and lost a prop 2 weeks ago. Not fun at all.

I have been told there were some bad shafts produced 2 years ago. A guy with a new 36' Henriquez in our marina has had 2 shafts snap right at the cutlass bearing within a week both on the starboard side. The dealer sent a tech and a rep. to see what is going on. This boat has a pair of 450hp Cummings and is used for fishing trips from our marina to the Hudson Canyon.

Luis at the price of props I think I would be diving in! There were people swimming I my marina today right at the dock, There is no way I would be doing that unless of course my prop fell off.

Rommer how did you snap your shaft? I don't think I have ever heard of this happening without hitting something real hard. Have you already made the repairs? Hope it all works out for you.

im gonna poke around the area in the dinghy with my fishing net.....hopefully i get lucky.

I'm just glad I didn't find it on my way out yesterday.

no luck searching for it yesterday...i might get an underwater metal detector to help.

What do the fractured faces of the shaft look like? If the fractured face is 90 degrees (+/-) to the axis of the shaft, that is a classic bending break, most likely from an alignment issue or a long standing distortion. If the the fractured face is 45 degrees (+/-)to the axis of the shaft, that is a classic twisting break, most likely from a recent striking or a recent really hard grounding. You can always take the shaft pieces to a Metallurgist and have them examined/tested if you suspect a defect in the base material, that's really easy to determine.

Well i went in with a full wetsuit and found it. Shaft still was attached. It snapped just inside the prop. I'll post some pics soon.

Just to the right of my slip sitting upright. One blade was sticking out the mud. I felt a lot of things down there. Wasnt brave enough to reach down to pick anything up though..everything felt sooo slimy. Even with boots on.

I would get a metal shop to look at that.
Could be you have stray current and it was eating the shaft.
Shaft shouldn't snap like that.
