Terrible fire early this morning at Port Kinsale Marina, down the Potomac from us on the Yeocomico River. Sad indeed...Nice marina, good times.

I take it a Covered Marina, from those tall piling that survived the fire? Covered is definitely nice, but it provides a conduit for one boat fire to spread slip to slip and of course then boat to boat. Marina's, or one boat's, electrical system could have caused this. Is Potomac classified as Salt Water there in Kinsale?

Yes, those were covered slips. Brackish water, haven't heard what caused the fire...yet.

Hard to tell from night time photos, but only one fairly small section of the marina is covered, so I'm hoping the majority of the marina escaped the flames. I'm guessing only about 20% of the marina is this covered section and it is off by itself from the rest of the marina. never kept my boat there, but have been there many times and have eaten in the restaurant many times over the past 50 years.

Kinsale is on the western branch of the Yeocomico River which is only about 10 miles up the Potomac from the bay. I keep my boat at a nearby marina about 2 miles away on the southern branch of the Yeocomico.

I ask about salt water because the more conductive the water is, the more current from faulty wiring can seek ground through it. More current, more heat, more chance to start a fire. Fresh water isn't as bad for that, but MUCH worse for people because we are so much more conductive than fresh is. So any stray current looking for a path will choose US. Just don't swim in a marina or anyplace using AC power.

I'm only guessing here, but I'd bet $5 someone had a heater going on one of those boats with the very cold weather we've been having these past few days. Hope I'm wrong as any number of things could have happened.

Didn't Colonial Beach Marina have a big fire about 15 years ago? How far is this one from there?

Around 35 miles or so.

Sure did...May, 2002. My brother lost two boats in that fire. 55 went up in flames. Yes, about 35 miles south of CB.

Wow, too bad.

I always enjoy the 2 hour trip down river. Been 2 years since we have been there for a weekend.

That's really a shame. Hope everyone had very good insurance coverage as marina's generally don't cover events like that.
Also hope CWMS is correct that that part of the marina is isolated enough so many others were totally spared.

Best luck to anyone here who may have a boat there.

I read that only 4 boats were destroyed and if I recall, that section of covered dock only had 8-10 slips. Most of the slips at the marina are uncovered and a fair distance from the covered slips. Hate to say, but it appears this marina isn't fairing too well as there were a lot of empty slips there this summer and I believe the restaurant closed last year as well.
