So the Governor just issued that Marinas are non essential. Will this mean we won't have access to our boats?

*** Coronavirus Update - April 9, 2020 ***

Governor Cuomo has issued updated guidelines surrounding the classification of non-essential businesses. Golf courses and recreational marinas have now been deemed non-essential.

Due to this directive, Town of Hempstead golf courses and marinas will be closed beginning tomorrow, April 10th.

This is going to be interesting going forward. Take Islip for example. They closed the marinas. So if you dock at Bay Marina, you can’t put your boat in. Yet the Marina Park is open. Loads of people, walking around down there. The docks which are boat owners only are closed.

Just curious about the word "recreational" here. Is that an important distinction? A loophole, perhaps? I just can't see how the marina where you moor or dock your boat is a problem if proper protocols are followed.

Seatow, cops, commercial fishing, ferry are not recreational!

I was about to launch my boat now I don't know what will be. I keep my boat in Stamford Ct at the moment they are still open but this too can change as soon as tomorrow.

Dave, I would launch your boat while Connecticut has no marina closure order. If there is one issued at least you are in and depending if your marina is private or town run, you may be able to still use your boat.

This is the plan let's hope it works out!

Many people winter on the hard at Steins in Sayville. Boats are stored in the ferry parking lot. You have to be in by a certain date so the ferry has their parking. Ferry is running. Where are those boats going?

As far as the commercial fishing license goes, I'm at the Town of Hempstead East Marina. There is a sign as you drive in stating "Marina is closed. If you need to check your boat contact the bay constable at xxx-xxxx. Even at the best of times they break your balls. I'm guessing if you try the commercial fishing licenses business on your recreational boat they will really make life tough for you. Not gonna risk a hefty fine just for a boat ride or a couple of hours of fishing.

They closed parks and marinas, both public and private, but if a boat is in the water behind your house or on a private lot, what’s to stop the owner from taking it for a ride or doing a little fishing by himself?

There is no ban using your boat. The ban is on marinas.

I moved my boat to Stamford today, it was a great ride only saw a handful of other boats on the water. There is only one other boat on my dock sadly to my surprise I found there was no power on the dock when I got there. I was told on friday water and power were on. Hopefully it will be resolved first thing in the morning! I have a service call in Westchester tomorrow I may run to the boat first to check on it. My wife doesn't want me going to the service call then the boat to minimize germs.
I'm a little concerned about the boat they are calling for 60 mph winds tomorrow

The boatyard that is right by me nothing seems to be happening, moorings and pick up sticks are still just sitting there, I had called them a few weeks back and they thought they were opening but his was before the pronouncement from Prince Andrew. However, I drove by another marina and saw a lot of cars in the parking lot and shrink wrap being taken off boats...maybe people just want their boats out of there, to be able to use ramps when and if they open? I am going do some work on mine but might just leave it winterized this year.

Dribs and drabs I see neighbors bringing their boats home. A friend has his boat in a yard in Bay Shore. They are dropping in whoever is ready. His scuttlebut is a bunch of guys from that yard dock at a municipal dock. They are planning to have about a dozen boats just drive over to the their marina in a group and do a mass docking. Figuring the parks guy can’t stop all of them, take the summons and figure it out later. Sounds fine unless they get a summons every time they hit the boat. Or worse get kicked out of the marina and getting back on a waiting list.

Zane, your friends group of boaters may be for a surprise. Most likely the parks guy who won't stop them will most likely be a bay constable, public safety or county marine police officer who could give them up to $1000.00 fine and pulling their slip agreement without a refund. I hope they think it's worth it for a few weeks extra weeks of boating.

You know the bravado is usually all talk. However look at Michigan today. People are getting fed up with some of these draconian rules. I think some of these guys are more afraid of the slip loss than the fine. Still have to go to court to be found guilty before you pay a fine. Bay Constables boat is still on the hard! Maybe they’ll be last to go in!

That's true Zane. The thing with the bay constables is that they bust your balls on a good day. I can't imagine how they'll act if you defy a state order. Anyway, I'm on the hard in my driveway ready to launch. Until then, be safe everyone!
