Just found out from my friend Trina (gas engine service dept) that Marine Max has just dumped a ton of people to bring in a "different type of customer service provider" Everyone who was getting paid way too much was laid off and told if they had a boat in the marina.. you have days to get it out.
They were all replaced with $8 hr employees who in her humble opinion are laughable. One of the newbies asked her "If a boat has two engines, that means it has two generators right?" [:-blindfold]
She said at least 7 boats (owners) picked up and left when they found this out last week too. She had been there 8 years as well as many others who were given the boot. One of the guys was there 18 years! She NEVER missed a day from work, always worked overtime and stayed after the bell etc. Very dedicated to her work.
BANG...GET OUT AND TAKE YOUR BOAT WITH YOU!

Doesn't look look good from here!

Didn't marine max service stink before? I guess they figured if the service was so bad why pay for it. Marine Max needs to cut costs, they might want to start at the top!

IMHO......given enough time I think M/M will crash and burn here on Long Island.

Just to add MTC, I keep my boat at SS3 and Trina was my service writer. I believed she tried to do a good job for me and tried to help me whenever she could as do many of the people at SS3 but I could see as days wore on it became difficult for her to do her job well and keep customers happy. A good example of what is happening is that I have been told in no uncertain terms that SS3 is a FULL SERVICE MARINA and if you don't have them do all the work then you can take your boat elsewhere and you can't winter store it there.
Sorry to hijack the thread but I am upset.

It defoogules me to understand how M/M corporate thinks they can step in and treat a community like this.........but yet EXPECT support from it too..........WTF is going on !!!!

"Everyone who was getting paid way too much was laid off"

Seems pretty standard these days. I am aware of someone who fired all his legal employees, and hired all illegals! Sad state of affairs, that is for sure.

I once was anti union, but have come to realize many companies would be better off with the union guys, and firing incompetent executives who can REALLY wreck the company.

The company does not need a union.

What they do need are customers who let their feet do the talking. Unfortunately, the squeeze on marina space plays in their favor.

Mark........ IMHO they need BOTH .....customers that don't put up with their $hit...and trade elsewhere......and a union shop to protect the workers

Then maybe they would appreciate their customers and work force .......

So they can work less and get paid more, kinda like working for Con-Ed :)

PS
I am just jealous I am not a Union employee, but am very happy I am not a union employer.

Walter.........your avatar must have been installed by a NON-union worker.........its not working !!

Don,

Not really a union fan but I'm not union bashing. I think union or not, it starts and ends with management. A union may protect the jobs, but poor managers will find a way to short change the customer and disillusion the workforce. In the end, you still wind up with poor service.

"Not really a union fan but I'm not union bashing"

Hey I meet Mark and we went to eat one night, first question should of been "how's the food at this place" Mark's frst question was "Is this a F-ing union place" :)

Don,
My aviator was contracted out to a union shop, the orignal quote was a $100.00 and it would be completed in 30 days. That was back in 1996, because of over runs and delays, I recieved a letter the other day that said this would be completed in 2010, and will now cost me 100k.

My understanding was that there was some sort of beer shortage, and the local drug dealer was busted, not sure what that had to do with this, but I am not a union guy so pardon me for being nieve to the workings of the union. :)

Local 6969 (the guys that really like to suck you dry)

Walter.........as a union member....I can relate to that situation. Hopefully their contract is successfully negotiated in 2009 and they are not out on strike.

PS.......I think I know the " shop steward " for that local...shes a good girl !!

"PS.......I think I know the " shop steward " for that local...shes a good girl !!"

Don,
You are correct, she is a very bad, I mean, good girl. Local 6969 require’s some special skills, the shop steward has certainly impressed me with these skills. Let me just say that I always felt a Hoover had the best suction, (local union ILD) but local 6969 not only has better suction but their technique is awesome, and when all was done I did not need them to kiss me.

I did hear about the possibility of a strike in 2009, but I am not worried. The knee pad clause in their contract is a no brainier, so I assume that big heads will rule.

Tough crowd ...with the end of the season approaching, this can only get worse.

And Walter, that is not entirely accurate. I believe I said "WTF" first and that was after I heard the the guy whose job title allowed him to grill the tuna was out on maternity leave for 37 weeks and nobody else was a member of that trade. ;-)

soon to be Marine Maxed Out. Everyone just give the princess wave at the dock.

As a former employee of Surfside 3, reading this thread is very interesting. Many of you will know me, just by me posting this. First of all, anyone who really knows SS3, knows that Trina tends to exxagerate just a little. No one was replaced by $8.00 an employees. The facts are Service Writers are paid an hourly rate + commission. Anyone who works on a commission rate knows, the hourly pay is low, but rest assured they are making ALOTT of money in commissions IF THEY WORK VERY HARD. It is called incentive. They simply "weeded out the yard" and unfortunately, Trina did not fit the "MarineMax family profile". It had nothing to do with the amount of money she made. Having said that, I personally know first hand that in her position (Service writer) it is very hard to please everyone. There are almost countless boats sold through SS3/MMAX every year. The boating season in NY is a short one. As a writer you are responsible not only for the boats in your marina, but those sold around you on Long Island / Chelsea Piers etc...as well. It is very hard to keep up with that sort of volume. MMAX definitely made it hard to do our jobs as writers, which is the reason I am a former employee. This is one of the reasons I chose to leave MMAX.
You should know that it wasn't all bells and whistles when it was owned solely by SS3. That company has always been mis-managed. Hyper fishing and Mintreglia both hit the nail on the head with their statements regarding "incompetent Excecutives" / "Poor Management". Union or not, workers are still following managements guidelines, and if those guidelines are incorrect, in the end, you are going to get a bad final product. In this case it is the Service Department. That is why the service is horrible, and always will be. The same people who ran SS3 service, are in control of the service department on Long Island for MMAX. As long as they are still at the helm, you customers are going to continue to get the same crappy service.
As far as Winter service goes....They have always had a policy in effect that THEY must do all the service to a boat if you winter store with them. They write their work orders in packages so they capitalize on the maximum amount of money they can get out of their customers.
Rendezvous, Raft ups, Marina parties, BBQ's, etc... They have always been a service for SS3 customers first. Meaning, SS3 customers will be invited 1st, and if there is any room left, then they will invite other stores customers. I must say I find it hard to beleive Matthew would say something like "You won't be invited to the rendezvous" because you didn't buy a boat from me. He may have said you won't be first on the list, but I doubt he said you won't be invited at all. Then again, you never know!!!!
Bottom line is MMAX on Long Island will crash and burn. The company is set up to fail. As you know, a publically traded company (HZO) has very public information. We all know what they spent to purchase the SS3 name. That is the key here... It is just the name. I think they are feeling the squeeze of trying to make the lease payment for the property that SS3 sits on, and trying to make back what they spent to buy the name. Unfortunately for you customers, you are feeling it as well. Prices have gone up, policies have slightly changed, services provided have gone down, but management is still the same.
I hope I have shed some light, or a little bit different perspective on this perticular situation.
Oh, 1 final note to Katie.... I am not speaking bad about anyone, and I can tell you are friends, but in all fairness, it is known fact that Trina took alott of time off, and managers ALWAYS locked the door and closed the department at quitting time no matter what. No one was able to stay late. They do not pay overtime. Never did... Never will.

"The facts are Service Writers are paid an hourly rate + commission. Anyone who works on a commission rate knows, the hourly pay is low, but rest assured they are making ALOTT of money in commissions IF THEY WORK VERY HARD. It is called incentive."

This is a statement that really intrests me, please tell me when I bring the boat in for service you are not trying to "sell" me crap that I probably do not need.

IMHO, when you structure someone's salary like that, you are forceing them to sell you stuff you don't need, you call it "incentive" I call it being a crook. When I take a boat in for service, I expect the service writter to be honest and tell me what I "really need" not to upsell me because he needs to earn a living. I understand as the service writter you need to do this to earn a living, my complaint or concern is the management that has created this.

I worked for a company in the telephone industry (service on phone systems)that would pay us a percentage of any part we sold a customer, funny thing was every customer needed a part.

Am I that nieve, or is SS3(Marine Max) doing what all major yards do?

Walter
