I have a 2002 Chaparral. There is a hatch on the swim platform used for ski lines etc. The lid (fiberglass) is now discolored and appears moldy. Can I use a weak bleach solution to try to clean this or will this damage the fiberglass? Opinions appreciated, thanks!

Bleach shouldn't damage fiberglass, but I would try Spray nine first. It works great on mold and helps keep it from returning.

Even straight bleach won't hurt fiberglass but I dilute 50/50. Recently read an article in Handyman magazine that stated a Lysol cleaner with bleach was better. Article is on boat. I'll do my best to post info when I get to Yacht over w/e.

"straight bleach" (Chlorox, etc.) is 5% - 6% chlorine to start with. It's on the label. Pure chlorine will kill you very quickly.

Bleach and a soap or detergent that's safe to mix with bleach can be used. Wash and rinse afterward. Another thing to try is Starbrite Non Skid Deck Cleaner. Great product. Follow the directions.

If none of the above works, try Starbrite Hull Cleaner. It's an acid that's safe for use on fiberglass and gelcoat. Again, follow the directions.

Is it green mold or black mold? Green mold you can wash away easily. Black mold never goes away. All you can do is bleach the black color out.

It's black mold. I tried Spray Nine today, worked on one hatch that wasn't too badly affected witht the mold, the other one did not come very clean. I'll try a bleach or bleach/detergent solution next. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

You can try Tilex on it as well. I use it on my upholstry when it gets moldy.

The product mentioned in Handyman mag that was better than bleach to remove mold is full-strength Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner Orange Breeze
