Guys I'm taking a trip the week of August 5th to 12th to the Montauk Yacht club, Champlins and then Townsend in Greenport on the back end. I'm leaving from Copiague and check in is 4pm in Montauk. What is the approximate travel time for anyone that has done the trip? Are there gas spots near the yacht club that I can fill up at? Leaving from Greenport back to Copiague is the best way to cut through Shinnecock canal and out Shinnecock inlet or should I go back around Montauk again? Any pointers would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I would say 3 - 4 hours to montauk in ocean. Longer inside.
Montauk to champlins is about hour.
Back to Greenport say 1.5
Greenport to shinnecock about a hour, then looking at about 3 hours out inlet and home.

Thanks for the input. Definitely going to run the ocean.

If Ocean is snotty you can limit your run to Fire Island Inlet and shinnecock then come inside. Shinnecock Bay and Peconic are great but then you deal with canal.

If you have never done the canal, you should know a few things, pretty basic stuff. Canal is easy if open and slack. If closed, then pay attention to lights and which side you want to fender on, don't tie off, just loop rope and hold. If Open and running like a rapid river, then power up to get thru and hang on tight! If the opposite direction, there is a chance they will make you use the smaller canal, running North to South, it is very tight, again, just get boat straight and go thru the speed you need to stay straight.

Fire Island inlet i hear can get low at low tide these days. Favor red side of buoys, follow channel, try to catch high tide.
Shinnecock inlet can get very hairy. I have seen huge swells in there, again, pick your path, and be prepared to take some waves till out or in depending on path.

As for your fuel question, by Montauk, go to Star Island, it is easy fuel stop. There is another one that is inside more to the right when coming in. Montauk yacht club I am not sure they have fuel or if they do I am sure it is a rip. All fishing boats go to Star.

I'm in Lindenhurst, going on the outside it's 95 nautical miles to Montauk so you can figure your running time based on your cruise speed. Usually about 4 hours for me.

It all depends on offshore conditions and the speed of your vessel. With Gale warnings up for this weekend and high seas until at least Tuesday, I'm going inside. That being said read the Moriches thread. This year it's a huge problem. I've run this way from Copiague for the last 30+ years drawing 4.5 feet. According to both SeaTow and Towboat there is an unmarked channel to the NE that will get me around bouys 25 and 26, but they need to lead me through. It's unmarked.
As south shore boaters we are screwed when off shore conditions are a problem.

Have heard of 5 different boats that have run aground in Moriches so far this year.

SeaTow and TowBoat say they can lead us through the NE pass. I draw ;.5 ft and they say no problem at high tide. It's an unmarked channel so we need them to lead. I don't understand why the USCG hasn't marked this passage ??

Issue is the North winds, it pushes the water out of the bay, so Moriches will be lower than normal.
Storm seems to of missed us and offshore webcams and buoys show decent conditions improving.
We are gonna try to run outside tommorrow but may go inside if not good and will call seatow to guide thru dogleg.

You have got to love TowBoat Moriches. Offshore conditions were not great. Went inshore and with the guidance of TowBoat leading us it was a no brainer. We met at bouy 15 and were lead south across the face of the inlet up to the unmarked NE passage towards Havens Pt. They then led us back to bouy 30 so we could continue our eastern transit. I draw 4.5 feet and the skinniest water I saw was briefly 6.5 feet. TowBoat Moriches has my support.

We did the same but then when we saw inlet it looked good so we ran outside. The boats near the inlet were unreal and made it look impassable to do what you did.
