Mystic - July 4

I sat around Townsend's pool with a cooler of my own beer and never got any grief.

Dave, you just must be a trouble maker!

Well that was 5 years ago, I am more seasoned now.

At the time it seemed stupid, becuase we were allowed to have water bottles that we brought in with water, but not cups. SO I guess they really didn't like when we filled water bottles with beer!

I really love the Westhampton town dock. It’s not fancy and you are basically on a parking lot. But they have lots of grassy areas, BBQ’s with a gazebo. Don nails it with all the other nice amenities like the town and beaches close by.

The best part for me is it breaks up a trip to Block, GP, MTYC etc. I like to time the locks to go through just as they open, about to close or lock though closed. Been though north when rushing a bit and prefer not to do again. Going south is much worse if they are rushing. Also, going back west I stay at the WHB town dock to time the Moriches tides.

I wonder how the service will be since Ira the very long time Dock Master retired. I always knew I could get a slip. I even had his home #. He liked his tips. But in the last few years he barely could catch a line. That was ok; I always tried to make the old feller feel he was helpful.

Duck, I always saw boaters with dogs, just do the right thing and you will be fine.

Going through the Locks just as they opened and flat as glass. Heading to Townsend.

Brad,
35 years ago we use to go there with my Dad's boat, that grassy area was filled with trees. I agree nice place and the town is fun.

Walter

Brad.....your in my slip !!!! Nice pictures....

Yes....it won't be the same without Ira ( alot less tip$ ).....he is one of a kind & a great guy.

If you go into the WH web site...village site map on the left...scroll down to ...web site archives...then " Ira Marcus Retires " you'll see pictures of his retirement party they had at the Marina last season. He's not bad for 87 years old....and still partying....

We are looking at Essex and Mystic the week before 4th now.
May even consider stopping at Westhampton ont he way home and stay there until the 5th.

Don, whats the time estimate from Lindy to WH?
May have to wake up early on the 5th and get the admiral back to go to work!

Dave.... its about 1 1/2 hours or so.....make sure you time high tide in the Morriches....and watch the markers....there tricky.

Dave,

I am only a couple miles east of you and I allow 1hr.30min to the tricky dog leg by the USCGS. It’s then about another 20 minutes to WHB. I cruise at about 23-28 MPH. Remember the tides at the Moriches inlet and the Moriches USCGS are not the same. It’s about an hour later. I like using the Cruise-Aid table put out by the Moriches Flotilla Inc. “Predicted high tide times at the USCG station Moriches” Should be able to get it at eastern sporting / fishing stores or even some restaurants. You can also call ahead to the WHB town dock, they are glad to give you the high tide times. At least Ira did.

Brad

You guys need to go to the "women only" forum and ask them to get your trip together!

We are starting to work out our cruise for june 29th to july 8th and it would be fun to 'bump into some of you - when you guys firm up your dates post them

We will definitely be going to Greenport for a day or two, we use it as a midway point, Westhampton and whatever is close to that on the south shore

Looking at google earth it looks like Westhampton Beach Municipal Marina is a 5-10 min walk into town -

Any feedback on other south shore must see's near Westhampton?

Anywhere we should stop for the night on the Peconic Bay?

May try to add Martha’s Vineyard(oaks bluff) or do this on a separate trip

Andy,

There’s, not a lot going on by Westhampton other than a few nice restaurants, town shopping, and very nice close beaches. Starr Boggs is an excellent up scale restaurant.

As mentioned on an earlier post, I use it as a stop off going east and then again coming back. As nice one or two day stay. Some like to stay longer and venture out.

If you wanted to head west and try some of the Fire Island hot spots, you would be in for a treat. But for your size boat, going on the inside though the Moriches, would need some tide planning. I have traveled with larger boats and know many who have done it with no problem. Watch Hill Fire Island is about 1 hour and 15 min west of WHB. Further west along Fire Island there are a bunch of places. www.fireisland.com

As for the Peconic Bay, or close by, Three Mile Harbor has a few marinas, Sag Harbor is home to many of rich and famous. Shelter Harbor has couple of nice marinas.

My group is now throwing around the following dates......maybe!

6/23 - 6/26 3 nites Essex
6/26 - 6/29 3 nites Mystic
6/29 - 7/2 3 nite East Hampton/Sag Harbor/Riverhead/Greenport
7/2 - 7/5 3 nites Westhampton

I gotta be home morning of 7/5 so wife can get to work.

Brad, How do I check tides again for Moriches? I want to pull out of WH at daybreak and be home around 8AM or so.

Andy, I also highly recommened Watch Hill or other Fire Island spots, but you would have to go thru moriches then which can be done, but will be a real nail biter with your boat. Not sure I would do it without following someone. After your through you can go home via ocean out fire island inlet.

what marinas?

a few years ago we went with a friend who's girlfriend had to go to work...during the week we stayed at Westhampton. I helped him bring her car out a few days early....and left it in the parking lot..... so she had wheels to go to work. At the end ....she took her car home and he took the boat. Worked out well...BUT...they weren't married....there was no WTF issue.

Andy,
Essex is Essex Marina
Mystic is the Seaport
EH/Sag/RH/GP - We gotta pick a location first
WH - Where Don is going.

Don, like that idea too. Maybe she can bring the car, I will bring the jetski and pick her up and bring her home on that. 2 hours on a jetski ain't that bad! Give me a chance to check out the low spots in moriches up close and personal!

Looks like we may be in Mystic on the 28/29 for a stop over to Martha's vinyard
to Oaks bluff for the 30/1/2 ,
then to Sag for the 2/3
then to West Hampton 3/4/5,
back to greenport for the 6/7/8 coming home on the 8th to huntington

Most of this is maybe untill we book the marinas
we can't book Oaks bluff untill 2/1
