Hi all, While I wouldn't recommend this at all to anyone, I do want to pass along the results. COMET. I kid you not, I washed an old houseboat I just bought with a scrub brush and COMET and it took all of the oxidation off. I only used the stuff as I felt I had nothing to loose but now I think it'll look like new. I will finish up this weekend with 3-M fg restorer and pass along the results. DISCLAIMER...I am not recommending this!
 
Actually your results are not surprising, using COMET as a wash is like giving your boat a wet sand with a scrub brush instead of the traditional paper. How thoroughly did you have to rinse it to remove all of the COMET residue?
 
Actually I will have to wash it again with regular soap to get all of the residue off but really think I won't have to compound at all, just wax/polish. It really is pretty shiny now though.
 
Yeah Bob but it was what I thought so badly oxidized I took a chance. I would never do it on good gelcoat.
 
I had posted last year that I used Comet with great results on a Hypalon dingy. Really made it look like new.
 
I used one of those Scotch Brite pads on my gelcoat once, what a mistake that was. It got the tar and bugs off, sure enough, but left a nice dull spot where I rubbed. It took a lot of elbow grease and "Finesse It 2" to get it back to its normal shine.
 
I'm a dinasaur guys. Don't even own a camera since my divorce. Wife used to do all the tech stuff. I'll see what I can do about getting one and posting some pics. Mike
 
We used to use Scotchbrite pads to scuff up old car paint before priming and painting when I was younger. It was cheaper and easier than buying wet sandpaper.
 
A little Wesley's Bleach-White keeps our Hypalon dingy topside looking like new.. it's a 2002 boat, and every spring launch, I have at least one person ask if it's a new dinghy..

We leave in the water all summer.. (fresh water) and it still cleans up like new.. last fall, I actually used a mild Scotchbrite pad w/lots of water to get it looking like brand new on the bottom too.. the Scotchbrite, does not hurt the Hypalon if used lightly. The Scotchbrite pad seems to loose some of the 'bite' as it gets more used. I used the same pad to do the entire bottom. This seemed to work better than anything else I could come up with.. the results were very surprising actually.

Disclaimer.. try lightly on your boat first to see if you agree. Our dinghy is a Mercury 310 Sport... (inflateable keel)
 
I have used Soft Scrub with good results on oxidized topsides.
 
I have used Soft Scrub on our non skid surfaces with fantastic luck. Very white and shiny when done. I always rinse good and wax afterwards.

Do you wax the nonskid too?
 
After hearing the results with the Comet I thought I would give it a try on my deck, which is 90% non skid...I am more than pleased with the results...I used a hard bristle scrub brush to clean with...I gave it a very good rinse, but tommorrow I will wash the deck with Dial soap twice and Friday I will follow up with a coat of Aurora non skid polish...
 
I have a chalky substance on the deck. Oxidation I guess. How did you apply the soft scrub. I noticed that when I used on the hull with a rag to remove black streaks it took the wax off. seems to work. Don't want to get myself in trouble. I applied 3m cleaner and wax in one spot and it turned yellow.
 
My detailer uses Bon Ami instead of Comet, etc. The abrasive is very finely ground egg shells and will not hurt even new gelcoat. It does not remove the wax either. I used it to take out a stain on my transom which seemed to be permanent. I wet the area, sprinkled Bon Ami on liberally, and let it set for several hours. Then I took the hose and flushed the area with plain water. The stain was all gone!
 
I once heard that you can get your car windshield really clean with Bon Ami.......takes some of those annoying spots off.
