I have been using Rotella T3 in my diesels. I have been told that they have come out with a better option, (T5) which is a synthetic blend and is suppose to be a better option. I always understood that you should not switch from regular to synthetic and vise versa. Does anyone have any info/opinion on this new option?

On broken in engines I have never heard of any reason against switching
 
Why do you want to change? You don't put a lot of hours on the boat, and you'll be selling it in two more years. What advantage do you get by switching?
 
You never wear out the Rotella now, why spend more money and toss twice as expensive oil down the drain.

Old school dino oil still works.
 
Never heard of an engine issue because of the type of oil used--assuming correct viscocity etc.
 
A boat mechanic believes this is a better oil for the boats and I understand that it is the same cost or a little less.

Hogan-This is one of my selling features. Frequent and unnecessary oil changes.
 
The reason is simple it cost less money for better oil! I can't think of a reason not to. I sent the link to Hank because I was surprised that Walmart was selling it for 12.97 per gallon. That is about three dollars less a gallon the T3 this is the on line price only but shipping if free for orders over $50. I had a hard time trying to figure out how to order more then 12 gallons this is all that comes up in the drop down I had to continue shopping and place another order for the same item for the ballance then the total count was correct.
Walmart also has pink for $2.67 a gallon but this is the in store price it is a actually more online and they won't ship it is store pickup only?
 
It looks like Walmart has mispriced the Rotella T5. I wonder if I can get 100 gallons. That will hold me for a decade.
 
I need 19 gallons. Going to order tonight. Boy I miss the good old days of 8 quarts per engine on my gassers
 
I got my order in, lets see how long until there is a price change?

How much will it cost you when they realize it is priced wrong?
 
Ordered but home delivery for this particular oil is no longer an option so I will have to pick up at store. I can wait. Plenty of boating left before I change oil.
 
Funny this morning I checked the site for the price but didn't notice until Hank pointed out they removed the free shipping with orders over $50.
I received conformation that my order shipped I should have it on Saturday. I may skip the change next year being I will have this oil better oil in there. I have always done an oil change every year regardless how many hours I put on the boat but this my change now.
 
Update Walmart canceled 4 gallons from my order and shipped an incomplete order. I now have to send an employee on an hour round trip to complete the order from the closest store that has this oil in stock. I don't think I will be ordering from them in the future! The only good news is I only paid $12.97 Per gallon for the T5 oil.

Not a good idea to let dirty oil sit in your engine all winter
 
Agree that it isn't most optimal but the oil isn't that dirty if you've used it one season.

Most of the oil sits in the oil pan over the winter.
 
I never would have considered not changing my oil every year but I think it was last year or maybe two years ago where a bunch of ROs on this forum where insisting that there was no need to change it every year. I felt if was cheap insurance but now I second guessing this being the oil has an even longer life span and I likely would use it up in two if not three years.
 
I also have always changed my oil every year but never really agreed that it was necessary. Say I put 50 hours on my engines. Clearly that oil is far from breaking down and can't imagine it would be that dirty. Gassers were cheap but now that your talking 19 gallons plus filters, I am starting to question the worth behind the change. More so than that, I hate changing oil.
 
Buyer beware Walmart is advertising the T5 oil in the picture but they are selling Triple in the description they were happy to send a call tag to pick it back up but being I need the oil anyway I accepted a 20% reduction in price which I'm really not happy with they caused a lot of grief trying to fulfill the order frankly they pissed me off!!!!
