Replaced the transom in my boat this winter. Had to do the motor mounts, too. 260/merc alpha, circa 1985... I made a jig that sets the position of the front mounts using the rear engine mounts (transom housing is mounted on the transom). I know up/down will be adjusted with mount studs. My question is side to side, what is the proper procedure for locating the front mounts?

Keith2,

Maybe you should post this in the Engines forum....should get more lookers than the detailing forum.

As a follow up I think some may be interested...although this was the most nasty job I've ever done.... After I had the new transom in and the transom plate mounted, I dropped the engine in and bolted in the rear mounts. I then located the front mounts where they lay (boted to the front mounts, but not to the boat), and pulled the engine back out. Drilled the front mounts, bolted them down and dropped the engine back in. Only had to move the engine 1/4 inch to get it aligned.

Hope this helps someone else contemplating a full transom/stringer/engine mount job.
