IN another thread you mentioned 6 weeks in the exumas. How do you go about provisioning for guests and crew for six weeks in the islands??

It s tricky... Even more since we didn't even go to Nassau at all but like everything in the Bahamas you need to be creative...

First we have a big cold plate freezer in the skylounge so we can pack most of the meat we need along with some of the seafood we can't get fresh locally (shrimp, salmon, etc).

Fruits and veggies are the big issue. We got some stuff in Gtown but selection and quality is limited. We were also able to get a few things in Staniel (tomatoes, salad, bananas, etc...) but you have to time it right depending on when the mail boat comes in.

Twice, guests flew in Gtown on a private jet so we were able to have someone buy fresh stuff in Miami, pack it in styrofoam coolers and bring them to the plane before departure

There is a new grocery delivery service in Nassau and they say they can ship to the islands, either on the mail boat or local flights. Haven't tried yet it but it is an option.. Also th grocery store in Staniel said they can order additional stuff and have it put on the mail boat.

Now, if you can go back to Nassau every once in while, it s lot easier. There is new supermarket right across Nassau yacht heaven which while not as good as they are stateside is still very nice by Bahamas standard. A little more $ than what we pay stateside but not to bad. In our case, we spent all the time in the southern exumas so Nassau was out.

Nets on a leash to catch Seagulls and Pelicans.
Fishing and Shel fish gear.
A big can of Tony Cacceries Seasoning.
An extra pair of Socks and they'll all be good for weeks.

Remind me never to hire Thud as my personal chef. I don't even want to know how he cooks socks...

No kidding Thud, I just roasted two turkeys for my church youth group tonight. Kicked them up with some liberally applied Tony's...

This is an 'aside' on the original subject.
Brian's post reminded me of the Hundred's of Deep fried Turkeys my wife did for the VFW in Ketchikan AK.

My wife 'injects' a seasoning mix into the Turkey with a big Hypodermic needle. It's the 'secret' recipe from her home folks in Louisiana.
Then lets the Turkey sit overnight in the Fridge.
The next day, she has a Crab Boiler, with Peanut Oil, up to a low bubbling boil.
Carefully letting the Turkey down into that hot oil, the turkey is done in 45 minutes or so.
Yummers....there aint no part of that Turkey left to spoil!!

I didn't realize it had that much salt. Even so, it does not affect my Blood pressure and the other 10% will make anything taste better.

You couldn't get by feeding paying guests with this stuff and it might not be necessary for larger boats, but for those with smaller boats and just a friend or family member along, there are microwavable meals available in supermarkets that need no refrigeration. Beef and mashed potatoes, chicken and noodles, meatballs and spaghetti, etc. Some are pretty good, some not so much so try one before you buy a dozen.

One of these per person plus canned vegetables makes a decent meal that can be stored most anywhere until needed.
