I am a soon to be owner of a 1984 36' AftCabin Motoryacht. There seems to be quite a few vintage Carvers out and about. This one has been very well maintained but I am open to any suggestions and advise. Is there anything I should be especially careful or watchful with this specific make and model? I plan to hire a mechanic to take a ride and listen before I sign on the dotted line.

Having a mechanic check out the engines is a good idea, but I'd have a full survey as well. He/she just might find problems that would more than cover the price of the survey.
 
Congrats on the purchase, just make sure to get a GOOD surveyor. They typically know any trouble spots with specific models. I say good surveyor because a friend of mine just bought a boat after a "bad" surveyor gave it the green light only to find he missed the soft deck and extensive (for fresh water) corrosion on the outdrives. The boat was not a Carver, but I wanted you to know what can happen with a bad surveyor.

Thanks for all the info. Don't want to get anyone in trouble but it has been very helpful. The surveyor is $18/ft and it's additional if they leave the dock. Does that sound correct?
 
Welcome along side...I have a 87' 3607 I take it that's what you're buying, I've owned her for 4 yrs. now and have enjoyed every minute of it. As far has problems my the model I've not found any. But do have it hauled and check for blisters I've fixed five so far, but I don't blame Carver for them the P.O. treated the boat like Sh#t for 8 yrs. And I knew that going in. Do make sure the Gen-set runs and holds a full load and run in for an 1/2 hr. under full load. And if a surveyor told me it was extra to take her for a check out I'd find me another one.
 
$20 is the going rate for a surveyor make sure you get one that will go on a sea trial with you. You can take the mechanic for a ride. Engines are important but if you have a issue let say your fuel tanks might need to be replace. That can be a costly thing with the new fuel today people had to replace fuel tanks your surveyor can tell you that. He can tell you alot he will look all informatin on that boat and guide you from there. He is there for you I would never buy a boat with out a surveyor even a brand new one. Just remember a 1984 is a 28 years old it will depend on how well the people took care of it.

As for the boat, the 3607 is one of my favorites and I'm incredibly jealous! Please do listen to all the great ideas about surveyors, etc. Elsewhere on this Forum there are good local marine surveyors and experts who can assist. Hope it all goes well for the boat!!!
