I'm researching a drone with video capabilities to purchase. The one that pops up the most is the DJI phantom 2. It gets great reviews. Does anybody have any experience with these things? I want to get it now so I can practice on land so I dont dunk it off my boat.

DJI makes nice Quad copters. I have been flying RC Planes for 30 years and Quad copters since they were introduced. I would highly recommend purchasing a simulator to practice on your PC before attempting to fly one of these on your own if you are inexperienced. Realflight makes a great simulator package which includes many different models of Quad copters in production today. When you get serious about your aerial video look into a brushless gimbal for your camera and if you really want to have fun check our Fat Shark and their "FPV" first person view goggles.

Have Fun!

That would be great Hank. You can film the Bowline BBQ float ride from the air, while you tow us around!

Very cool, hogan I was hinting the same thing. If he get a lot of good shots it will be much easier for me to pick pictures for my home part slide show!

The big boys now using them to hover over their Marlin baits and record the bite. One captain told me they had four and usually lost one every trip.

Yeah, these things are too expensive to lose in the water. Adru-do you have any experience with the Mariner?

Do thes things have a hover mode where you can lock it in to follow the remote and hover? In other words say I sm on my boat running. Can I set it to follow boat and film it running with me and remote on it? That would be cool.

I remember running up the Hudson and a helicopter withe their website followed me and took pics and wanted to sell them for around $500. Maybe I could quit my job and go into business. It would also be great for my wife's real estate business. We could write it off as a business expense.

The only experience I have with drones is the inexpensive type you can buy for under $100. I have been thinking about buying a better model and in my research have found the Mariner but haven't bought one. Something to keep in mind is the fact you need to buy the GoPro camera and mounting accessories in addition to the drone. I like the idea it is waterproof though I haven't found to many customer reviews to base a buying decision on. You can buy one here...

You will find yourself being charged by the FAA. You are using a drone for commercial purposes which is not yet approved.

Theoretically agree but doubt this would be an issue as long as I'm not in NYC or airspace of planes. I like the idea of the mariner. It films underwater so I can check for sharks before jumping in. :) I just need to figure out proper gimbal and camera.

Boatpix. They took two sets of our boat, one on the Chesapeake and one at Sandy Hook. The pix are great, but quite expensive.

I had two drop into the drink; one in saltwater that I recovered but it didn't survive, and one in a freshwater pond that I never found. One was a phantom and one was a lesser expensive one (about $500 version).

No it is not "theoretical". It is black letter law right now. Use them for business use and you will be charged. Does not matter which airspace you are occupy.

So does this mean that I can't charge Hogan for snapping pics of his vessel in Bowline?

It just means you can't charge me for the service

Check out AirDog dot com . I will have a couple on order a soon as the first batch is released and positively reviewed.

AirDog dot com

That's cool! Will put boatpix out of business or at least lower the cost of their pics!

It would be great for many folks on your side of the river to checkout raft-ups at Croton Point while they are sitting in their slip waiting for high tide.
