I'm stealing an idea from LICC and making this a "sticky" post with our best ideas for the above topic. I'm going to leave the thread open for posting so put your best ideas here and I'll edit them into this post. Would become a guide to cruising the area. I'd like to think it should cover from NY Harbor, Raritan Bay, down the coast to Cape May including the ICW and Barnegat Bay. Hopefully we can get more discussions going on in this forum.

Please open a new topic if you have questions about any of the tips presented here. Only post in this thread if you are adding to the list. Thanks!

Marinas

Lighthouse Point Marina near the town of Toms River has accommodations for transients and has a pool. Beer and food within very short walking distance. Not sure if it will keep two teenagers occupied unless they like to swim or fish. You may be able to find a bus to the ocean and/or Seaside boardwalk. As mentioned prior, you can take your boat to Tice's Shoal and walk over to the ocean.

Forked River Marinas – Forked River
There are a bunch of marinas in Forked River that have transient slips. If these are not available, Google for other marinas in Forked River. Starting from the East, Southwinds and Captains Inn are mentioned in the Restaurant section. These two should be contacted in advance, but may have room the day of reservation as they are also Dock and Dine. Southwinds is full service and has a pool.

In addition, there are Wilber's, Silver Cloud and Marina at Tall Oaks (contact (609) 693-2145), their website was recently taken down) which are owned by the same entity, and the Forked River State Marina http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/marinas.html . These marinas are closer to Route 9 and are within walking distance of food, liquors, boat parts, marine store, bait, ice, mechanic and buses to NYC and AC. Wilber's, Silver Cloud and Marina at Tall Oaks should be contacted two weeks prior to stay. The State Marina can only be contacted day of stay.

The Marina at Barnegat Light – Barnegat Light
Just inside of Barnegat Inlet. Barnegat Lighthouse is a mile walk if you feel like climbing 217 steps (worth the hike). Best bait selection on the bay.

Morrisons Full service marina on Long Beach Island. Beach Haven.

Beach Haven Yacht club. Cheapest fuel prices around. VERY nice people. Small and cozy without a pool but they provide beach badges for the ocean as well as free bikes to go exploring. Tuckers across the street is a decent restaurant, not sure if Morrison's* rebuilt their restaurant after the fire but thats only 4 blocks away. The amusement park is in walking distance for the boys. Been there several times and always enjoyed ourself. No website but you can reach them at 609-492-9101
*3/12/07 As per SBskier - Still not rebuilt with no plans to do so.

Escape Harbor Marina, but I am not sure (at least the website does not mention) that they have transient slips. Beach Haven Gardens.

Farley's State Marina at the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City. It has the obvious Gambling, along with entertainment at the Dockside Marina, floating docks, easy access from the Ocean or the ICW and Jittneys ($2.00) to take you into town to visit other Casinos/restaurants, Ocean, Boardwalk and the newly developing outlet stores. The slips are a bit pricy at $4.00 foot on weekends. Courtesy of Dominic.

Schooners Island Marina in Wildwood NJ. Enter the Ocean at the Cape May Inlet and then go north a few miles on the ICW. Nice marina with clean facilities, pool, floating docks, plenty of restaurants within walking distance and the Ocean/Boardwalk for the kids......

Anchorages

Treasure Island, a.k.a. Osborn Island
- Location: Manasquan River (40В° 05' 030" N, 74В° 04' 018" W, FL Red Buoy 4)
- Comments: Approach from West, give island way as there is a spit to the South that is submerged at high tide. Tide range about 3 feet. Low tide can be a problem for drafts over 3 feet or so.

F-Cove, a.k.a. Traders Cove
- Location: West Mantoloking (40В° 03' 075" N, 74В° 04' 000" W)
- Comments: Just North of Mantoloking Bridge on the Western Shore. Local hangout. There is a hump at the entrance to the cove that is around 3ft deep, but after you get into the cove it is very deep. Most folks nose their bow against the bank.

Silver Bay/Mosquito Cove, Just west of Cattus Island Park.
- Location: Coordinates 39В°59'43.51"N 074В°07'35.85"W. On the southeast corner of Silver Bay is Mosquito cove. Coordinates 39В°59'15.47"N 074В°07'36.88"W
- Comments: Charts shows minimum 4' depth in the area.

Applegate Cove, a.k.a. Cattus Island Park
- Location: Township of Toms River (39В° 58' 847" N, 74В° 07' 066" W)
- Comments: Just south and to the west of ICW #24 or just north and to the west of ICW #26

Windy Cove
- Location: Pine Beach, on the Toms River (39В° 56' 398" N, 74В° 10' 724" W)
- Comments: On the south shore of the Toms River approximately 3.75 miles West of ICW # 33 at the mouth of the river. Deepest water in river. Good for Northeast blow. Fireworks 4th of July

North Shore of Berkley Island Park
- Location: Berkley Township (39В° 52' 474" N, 74В° 08' 040" W
- Comments: Just north and west of the Cedar Creek mouth.

Tices Shoal
- Location: Island Beach State Park (39В° 50' 026" N, 74В° 05' 571" W)
- Comments: 3 feet of water at that mark. On the East side of the Barnegat Bay just north of the Barnegat Inlet. Sandy bottom, shallow water and a boardwalk to walk from the bayside to the ocean. From the North, from ICW #40 set a heading of approximately 155 Degrees for approximately 2.50 miles. From the South, from ICW BB set a heading of approximately 90 Degrees for approximately 3.0 miles. In either case, you will know you are there when you can't see the beach through the boats. Watch the depth gauge, OK for larger drafts just don't get to close to shore.

Barnegat Light Anchorage
- Location: Barnegat Light (39В° 45' 417" N, 74В° 06' 918" W)
- Comments: Just inside the inlet, good protection, big tide range. Watch the greenheads. Mark is the area back in the marshes, south of the main channel

Destinations

Toms River Downtown/Huddy Park/TR Maritime Museum - Toms River
http://www.downtowntomsriver.com/bid/events.htm
http://www.co.ocean.nj.us/museums/TomsRiverSeaport/about.htm
Downtown Toms River hosts events throughout the summer. The Chili Cook Off, Wooden Boat Festival and Classic Car Nights are favorites. Wooden Boat Festival is hosted by the TR Seaport Society. The museum has wooden boats that were made locally. Boaters can tie up at the mouth of Toms River next to the bulkhead except for the Wooden Boat Festival as the wooden boats use the bulkhead. Water is deep, but dockage may be limited to your beam as the river gets narrow at the mouth.

Tuckerton Seaport – Tuckerton
http://www.tuckertonseaport.org/
A little tricky to navigate, but a nice ride in. There is an excellent BYOB restaurant in the seaport called Skeeters. They are under new ownership this year, so I can't really give an honest opinion...or did I just do that...hmmmmm...anyway

I think a few updates are in order.....Sadly, Gilcrest dinner in Atlantic City appears to be shut down. I have no other information, just a first hand report from a neighbor that the restaurant was closed down. I sure hope it opens back up....

Also, Anne's Restaurant, in Wehrlen Brothers Marina in Brick down the Metedeconk, looks like it is undergoing some rennovations. Hopefully someone has some near term plans to reopen....makes for a nice breakfast stop by boat...

Anne's Place is being renovated and will open soon. The owner of Antonios on Mantoloking Road, Brick has purchased or leased the property and will be operating an Italian restaurant. I do not know what the name will be or whether they will be open for breakfast...I hope so. That was a great AM destination for boaters.

In Atlantic City, you can stop for a few hours at the Farley State Marina (Trump)with complimentary docking. We did that last year on a Friday and had lunch at the Hooters in Trump. They had us tie up right below the "DECK". Very convenient to the property.

Davefin:

Thanks for the info. If you could, please post when the new restaurant opens for business.

DaveFin: Any update on the Old Annes restaurant opening???

As for Gilcrest Diner in the Atlantic City Basin: The Old Gilcrest building has been raised...completely demolished....BUT....I was told from from a reliable source that they have opened a place in nearby Absecon (not accesseble by boat) and have full intentions of rebuilind on the original site and that they should be open for business by next season....

Update on restaurant formly known as "Anns Place".

Traveled there, by boat, last weekend to use the pumpout at the marina. Was informed by a boater docked there that opening of the restaurant should be within the next couple of weeks. They were finishing the landscaping outside when I was there. I'm going to try again in two weeks.

THANKS so much for posting this info as a "sticky." As a new boater, this is exactly the information I was seeking. Looking for places to beach my boat, enjoy some lunch etc, relax at anchor or tie up and go to dinner. Will have to venture over to Cattus Park this coming weekend to explore this further.

Another Update for the restaurant formerly known as "Ann's Place".

Antonino's Sunset Point Grille is about ready to open in the spot previously occupied by Anns Place. Grand Opening is near, but not yet known. Also not known is if they will be serving breakfast here as in the past.

Anxiously awaiting opening.

Also, I hope they get the 59 Marquis moved that is now taking up all of the restrauants docking space.

Small addition to the list. This is dual posting. A place to eat and a place to dock. Morrison's gas (good prices by the way) will rent you a tie up spot on their dock: $20 for 4 hours. Their dock is in a No Wake zone on the ICW. It's not protecetd so a full set of fenders are recommended. From there you can walk into town and amusement park. Last night we ate Tuckers restaurant on LBI.

We always liked Tuckers which BTW is open year round.

Been on vacation but I'll try to consolidate all this new information when I get back.

Gardners Basin in Atlantic City has The Flying Cloud Cafe and The Back Bay Ale House. They're both good. Gardners Basin has other fun shops and stuff in addition to an aquarium, tour boat rides and a new high speed power catamaran. Gilchrist's will have an all new place for next season. The Old Waterway Inn, on the ICW, port side, is about a mile past the Rt. 30 Bridge before you get to the RR Bridge. A floating dock. Through the RR & AC Expressway bridge and past the Albany Ave, Rt40/322 Bridge, right next to the bridge, port side, is The Wonder Bar with an outside Tiki Bar and a nice inside dinning room. Also a floating dock, usually crowded on weekends though. Locals know where to go, but everybody there is friendly and boats will reposition and raft if there's room. Watch out for the limited bridge opening restrictions. Afternoon lunches can take longer than planned for. Then you'll have to stay for dinner! No places to stop 'till you get to Margate. I'll put that on another post.

New to the boards... tied up in Cape May Courthouse (Bayway Marina), transplanted from Locust Point Marina, MD. Could I ask a few of the more "seasoned" boaters in the area for destinations in the Cape May area to dock and eat, maybe entertain the kiddies. My wife and I go down every weekend, we have a property in a campground nearby. We will usually have children with us during the day (neices and nephews), but it would be just me and my honey at night... any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Wehrlens Marina in Brick, NJ
is in the process of being sold. The old Ann's Place is now Antonino's Sunset Grille.
It is open for breakfast lunch and dinner
however prices are much higher than Ann's were.
Dinners are high end seafood and steaks..not Italian as at Antonino's Tattoria on Mantoloking Road. Hope this was helpful.

Did breakfast at Antonino's Sunset Grille last Thursday. Service was very slow as it appears that most of the help is inexperienced. Breakfast food was very good. I will be going again. Not much dockage available as that 59' Marquis is still at the restaurant dock. I was told that the boat belongs to the new owner of Wehlans Marina. Hope they get it situated somewhere else soon. Ann's Place was always one of my favorate breakfast locations.

I have given Antonios resturant in Wherlin Bros three chances for dinner and I am not thrilled to say the least. Only about a 10 minute ride from my house and I would go often, but not until the food and service gets better. Certainly not Anns Place. At least their you knew what you were getting for the price, good food at a fair price. Steve

that's very disheartening....I was actually planning to go there this weekend. I figured they would have had enough time to get their acts together AND the crowds would be down by now.

How about docking facilities...??

Also, did you try their lunches or breakfasts?

Wehrlens is now Sunset Pointe Yacht Harbour. New Owner plans on keeping his boat along the restaurant. Not many spots for boaters to tie up for waterfront dining. I'm from the marina and everyone is very disappointed in the new restaurant. We had all hoped for something more affordable for families and the "working class". Prices are high, service is terrible. Dinners are from $19-36 for entrees.
No liquor license. Bad experience for breakfast and lunch as well. Lunch took 1.5 hours for 5 people-with NO ONE else in the restaurant. 2 orders were served after everyone else was eatting-and there was food on the floor and on some chairs. Last weekend it cost me $12.57 for scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries and one cup of coffee....that was without the tip! i sure miss Anns for breakfast. Also miss seeing Nancy-she was a sweetie.
New marina owner has some good plans-just hope we don't all get priced out.
hope this is helpful.

Thanks Tidal....guess I'll have to change my dinning plans for the weekend....too bad..
