I have been using buff magic for a couple of years along with Trewax Four Season Boat Wax. My 10 year old boat looks like new. After reading many, many threads, including BobV1's wax vs polish, I would like to try Pro Polish. Can I apply Pro Polish over the wax or do I need to strip the wax and then apply Pro Polish?

Tim, how much wax/how many coats do you have on the boat now? Wax will tend to yellow as it builds up. If you just have a fresh coat on you can go over it with the Pro Polish. If you have some build up I would wash it with Dawn detergent, but not use a heavy concentration, this will give you a clean surface without stripping too much of the natural oils out of your surface. Are you going to use a machine to apply/remove the Pro Polish or are you doing it by hand? With a machine you can get some "polishing action" from the product so if you do not have a lot of wax build up and your surface is clean you can go straight to the Pro Polish.

My suggestion would be to wash your boat with Dawn first and then apply the Pro Polish. That way, you're starting with a clean surface.
The solvents in Pro Polish will dissolve the wax, but I think you'll be better off if you remove the wax prior to using the Pro Polish.

I only have one coat of wax on the boat. Just applied it two weeks ago, so I think I will stay with the wax this year. I do not let the wax build up from year to year. The boat (355 Aft cabin Carver) looks great right now. I just want it to look even better.
One question, how do you know when the hull needs another coat of Pro Polish, or do you just put one on each year? My boat is only in the water from late May till late September. Thanks.

This is the first year I've used the Buff Magic and Pro Polish combination. For the past two years I've used the Aurora Marine line of products with good results. Their Boat shine lasted all season.
If the Pro Polish is anything like the other polymer polishes, I would expect it to last all season. At least, I'm hoping.
