Put-In-Bay, Lake Erie

Mike, our plans have changed some. We aren’t departing Ashtabula until the eve of 7/3 or morning of 7/4.

First stop will be Mentor Harbor YC for a couple days and maybe one day a Mentor Lagoons YC
Next will be Cleveland...haven't decided where yet.
Next will Lorain for one day at the Lorain Sail Club
Next will be Vermillion at the Vermillion Boat Club (hopefully) for a couple days
Next move will be Sandusky Harbor, Cedar Point and Harbor Bay where we have a good reciprocal, 3 -4 days
Next will be the islands, haven't decided yet where for a couple days but probably Kelley’s. The date will probably be somewhere around 7/11
Next we will cross over to Leamington and work our way home (east) on the Canadian side stopping at Rondeau and Port Stanley before crossing back on 7/19 or 20

Of course knowing us this will change a lot

I think to go to Leamington you will have to have a passport today.

You will need a passport or Nexus pass.. most likely, you'll only be asked for the passport upon your return.. Both PIB and Cedar Point Marina have video phones available still.

Hey Mike, Niles,

As Seth mentioned.. if you come to Sandusky, you'll be most happy w/Pier 11 at Cedar Point.. it might cost a little more than the south basin.. but you'll appreciate Pier 11 much better. I'm basically saying the up-charge to get on Pier 11 is worth the extra $$. BUT reservations in advance are recommended.

SHM is OK.. but not much to do there IMO, and you'll have to like Coal Dust too!!
(yes, we spent a few years there prior to Cedar Point)

Huron Boat Basin is nice too.. (not sure there's much to do there tho)
As for Kelley's... either Portside or Seaway.. Portside is right downtown.. but can get a little bumpy (depending on the winds)
Seaway, is protected. but you'll need wheels and/or they can raft in there.

TCN IS very nice during the week as Seth notes... & should have no trouble getting a dock w/them.. but I would be sure to call in advance.. Middle Bass is a beautiful Marina.. but not much to do there.. you can taxi over.. I would suggest staying on PIB if you can during your stay.. (Middle Bass is a nice backup option tho)

Have a great trip..

We have been done both areas of CP. Up front is closer to food and more activity and you guys but we like entering the park from the south basin. I don't like doing resevations at CP so we'll probably end up in the south basin. For us a trip from Ashtabula to CP is a one time a year trip and the last I knew they only give rain checks.

We have a couple boats from our club out ahead of us and they are going to try SHM and they will let us know how it is, we are used to the coal dust.

I have not been to Middle Bass yet but we don't mind taking the taxi, in years past I have stayed on kelley's and took the jet to PIB. If I could tust my genrator I would love to do a ball in PIB.

I can't wait to get this started :)

It sounds like you're ok with the south basin anyway, but worth noting is that both sides Pier 11 is once again dedicated to transients. That should increase everyone's odds of getting onto 11 without making reservations far in advance.

The far side of Pier 11 has 40' finger docks and can accept boats that are several ft over 40' LOA. The fingers closer to Famous Dave's / fuel pier are 50 ft., and the same rule applies. (useful for those of use whose LOA's are ~10% longer than the model number of the boat...)

The south basin, with it's proximity to the front gate, gives you a great advantage to use the marina "early entry" to get in line early for Gatekeeper. Most other contentious rides are closer to the marina entrance. (including Top Thrill, Millennium Force and Maverick) Raptor is just about the same distance from each entrance.

Seth is right about the entire pier with the 40/50' split.. Just nice to be closer to where all the action is, much nicer docks & most likely cleaner docks. (less sea gulls).

as for SHM... We still have several friends there & retain our HBYC membership. They are ILYA & do reciprocate, but even my wife says there is absolutely nothing to do there!!. The only thing that comes to mind is you can walk to Toft's for the best ice cream in the area... (maybe ~1/2 mile each way?) Cameo's pizza will deliver there as well..

Beware, 80/20 sail to power!! (just sayin) lol

btw, you will get a great sunset at SHM.. (naturally, weather permitting)

Its great to get marina specific info from you guys. Thanks.

I'm hoping Monday July 1st turns out to be a decent marine forecast day for us to head from Lake St.Clair, down the the Detroit River and across to Put-In-Bay. Looking forward to the Put-In-Bay mooring ball for our first night to start our boating holiday. :)

SLW, we are ok with either location at CP. Over the years I think we have only been in the south basin twice. 2009 was the last time we were at CP and we got the south basin.

DogDaze, their S to P split is about the same as us, we are 70/30. After looking over my list I see I left off Port Clinton YC so maybe we will go there after leaving CP. We will be out 17 or 18 days so who knows where we will end up :)

ah, no problem.. we like boating in your area too.. (& SLW does both)

We brought our 3575 down from Belle Maer Harbor in 2010 (w/SLW) & had a great trip. Ironically we kept it on Pier 11 at Cedar Point the 2010 season when it was still a mix of transient and permanent dock holders. Initially, not thrilled by the number of transients.. BUT we had a great summer w/many MI boaters who come from the Lake St. Clair area.. all very nice folks.

As for SHM.. that was our Home Port for ~4-5 years prior to coming to Cedar Point. So, we know both marina's well & have friends at both.. (for reference, 'we' like CP much better!!)

Let us know if you have any other questions & will try to help assist. I'm hopeful you'll have a nice trip in that time frame. - j

Joe, we are going to Huron Boat Basin in a couple weeks to the GCBA summer rendezvous. My wife is driving up Friday the 21st and we have a room somewhere for 2 nights. I am leaving Ashtabula on a sailboat Wednesday the 19th and hope to be there by Friday :)

West side entrance to Vermilion is closed due to shoaling from Sandy. East side open. Great dockage and easy walk to town at the water works on the right. This is about 1 week old info. I would follow uo with Bill or Ed at the Vermilion port authority to confirm.

Hi Niles,

Yes by sail boat, I'm hopeful you can make it in just 2 days.. should be fun tho.. take lots of beer and bring a fly swatter! ;)

also,
I've heard the same/similar as Ron notes regarding the entrance into Vermillion from a Cedar Point dock neighbor who lives on the Lagoons. I agree, definitely be sure to give Bill or Ed a call..
(we used to be dock neighbors w/Ed when at SHM) Ed & Bill both are very awesome to work with..

I'll be coming from the East and will enter there. My friends doing the GCBA rendezvous are thinking of back tracking to Vermillion after the rendezvous, I will pass along the info.

I had a couple vacation days to use by 7/1 so when I heard a freind was making the trip to Huron by sail single handed I invited myself along. If we get favorable winds we will do it all in long a$$ run :)

We are also heading over from Lake St.Clair (MacRays) to Cedar Pointe for the July 4th week, on Pier 11 (I am 90% sure thats the docks next to "Famous Dave's" restaurant). Look for us on the 40' slip side, most likely docked "stern in".

It's been a few years since gas prices went up and DOCK'ed Wage$ became a "dock queen", but we decided to splurge this year. Just wrapping up my engine room R&R project this week (complete rebuild / repaint - like new installs) and want to "break her in" right.
Definitely open to sharing a "cold one" with some fellow BE'ers... Met Kenny (fellow Carver owner) there the last time we ventured over.

Regards,
Don

Hi Don,

You'll have to venture over to Pier 1 if ya get a chance for a stroll... maybe we were on Pier 11 when you were there last??
It was our seasonal dock for the 2010 season.. back before we found out they were putting transients on the 40' side w/us..
I suggested to marina management that I didn't realize we bought a transient slip & suggested they offer us a discount..
well, you know how well that went over.. lol

We moved to Pier 1 in 2011 and they make Pier 11 all transients in 2012.. (so, we'd have had to move off 11 anyway) We did have fun with all the transients.. I'd guess maybe 80% were from MI... & many from Mac Ray and Belle Maer..
btw, did ya see Kenny's new boat yet?? - j

We left on the 7am bridge from Ashtabula and passed the outer green at Huron at midnight. 17 hours to go around 90 miles. We had good wind most of the day out of the NE. We had planned on stopping in Lorain but following the wind got us way off shore at Cleveland and to get to Lorain would of been really late so we just pressed on to Huron. Long but a nice trip, the moon last night was like a flashlight.
