What is the safest way of removing paint from fiberglass? Our 1988 Bayliner has striping that is "stick on" tape at the edge (which is cracking and peeling) with paint underneath. The tape striping is no longer available, so am considering getting rid of all striping (tape and paint). Pros - cons - best way to get rid of the paint without affecting the underlying gelcoat.
Thanks.

Paint remover will work. When you take the paint off there will still be a stripe though, the gel coat that was covered with paint did not fade.

I used oven cleaner to remove old letters off of the stern because I was told it was less harmfull to the gel coat. I don't know if that is true or if it is a old wives tale.

It is paint for sure - similar to bootstripe paint - dark blue in color.

You will most likely have a discoloration in the gelcoat underneath the paint strip. So you'll most likely have to either wet sand the area or do a heavy compounding. Might be easier just to replace the tape.

i agree. it will be easier locating the same "tape". check with an automotive stripping company, or a graphics company.

i assume by you saying it "isnt aval. anymore" is from a dealer...
