repainting lower unit

At the end of last season I noticed chipped paint on my lower unit (Mercruiser Alpha One/GenII). There is bare aluminum showing and it looks like it is just starting to oxidize.

The boat is kept in dry rack storage so I am not concerned about marine growth. What is the best product to use to repaint the lower unit? Does it need to be primed with a special primer first?
 
There is a great How To Paint Aluminum at the top of the ASK THE CAPTAIN forum. Aluminum has to be etched inorder for the paint to stick. its a great read. I have followed those steps with excellent results.
 
thanks for the input. I was assuming the lower unit was aluminum, could it be made of a different material?
