I remove the old decal using the eraser wheel OMG what a breeze to use! So my question is aside from using compound and a buffer (which I have tried and it helped) how can I get rid of the shadow of the old name before I replace it. Although the new name is the same it will look totally different so it won't cover.

Wet sanding will help, but if the name was on there a long time, the gelcoat will be "stained" and won't clean up completely. However, from being in the sun, the original name will bleach out probably within the season.

The current decal has only been on the boat 4 years I really don't want to wet sand if I can avoid it but thanks for the input. I may have to just let the sun do it's job. I haven't put the new name on yet but I will do so as soon as the swim platform is re-installed I don't want to take a chance of damaging it before this work is complete.

I need to rake my name off. Just ordered the wheel. Any tips?

The eraser wheel took it right off it leaves a bit of a mess of eraser dust but it's easy to wipe/wash off! I used compound and a buffer to get rid of much of the shadow left but it still shows. I think once I re-install the new decal it won't look bad.

BTW I went to the local auto parts store they didn't have the 3M pad but they had one for half the price and it did a great job!

Can't help with the shadow, but those wheels are great. Won't hurt the gelcoat either. I've been using them for a few years and swear by them. Sure beats a hair dryer and razor blade. Why anybody wouldn't use one is beyond me.

Today was the first time for me and I must say it works great!

Yeah, don't use a rake! That will scratch the hell out of the gelcoat! Try one of those eraser wheels instead.

(Sorry, man, devil made me do it)

With time, the sun will take care of the shadow. The shadow is the original color of your gelcoat, its just been covered by the name so in a way its been protected from the elements.

No it is clearly not the original color it looks more yellow not white.

Your original color is probably "More yellow", the white is bleached out from the sun.

I don't believe the boat was ever that yellow. Keep in mind this decal is only 4 years old.

It's a common problem. I do advise to wet sand and then cut/polish. My specific advise though is to wet sand enough that it is not noticeable but not perfect. You really won't be removing that much material. Use a block. Don't go nuts. Take the edge off the notice factor and then let the sun do the rest. Do NOT try to make it perfect. It's easier to someone else boat than your own, as with your own you just want to keep going that extra mile. Resist. A fifteen to twenty minute wet sanding will be all you need or want. Sounds like a lot, but remember you need to be ready to got through the range of grits, that's probably like 4 or 5. I can't recall, but I seem to think I'd start with something aggressive like 400 and that goes VERY quick, but then you go through the range all the way to like 1200 before compound/polish.

Use a block. Use a block. Use a block!!! Get your squirt bottle and keep it wet, and avoid getting too pasty.

Carvers were a yellowish prior to 1983. Since then, they've been white. And for those that don't know, Trojans have been Carvers since 1992 when Carver bought the bankrupt Trojan.

I still say give it time, the sun will bleach it and you wont notice it

I've had good luck removing old decals with a heat gun (hair dryer would do it, too). When you heat it just enough to soften the decal and adhesive, they peel right off, a section at a time. Seems easier than using an eraser wheel, and nothing new to buy.

My .02

I had the heat gun and I had a plastic razor in stand by but the wheel just stripe it right off much quicker then I could even heat the area. The last time I removed my picture decal I struggled using the heat gun if I had this eraser I would have been done in less the half the time.

Nothing is easier than an eraser. Don't knock it until you try it.
