Rouge Wave in the Great South Bay?

Ok maybe not a wave, but I saw the strangest thing last week… It was very calm water and no boats out that I could see…. I was standing at the end of the dock after work, I guess around 7:00, still a bit light gazing out looking south east towards the RM bridge when I notice the water raise like a hump heading towards my dock on an angle. I am talking a significant raise considering no winds, chop and no boats. It hit the dock and water and spray went up over the dock, then nothing.

I would expect that near Fire Island, Ocean beach etc. Very Strange….. [:-boggled]
 
U neglected to locate the the shot girl in ur post ... Was she was practicing for that video walter and dave have going around ???
 
Actually, maybe it was Rob hitting a shoal in Merrick since they have not put out his personal buoys. [:-smirk]
 
Nessie came over from Loch Ness for a visit or maybe Jaws is back.
 
I've heard rumors of these things happening passed down by mariners from long ago...but I don't think it's ever been caught on film!
 
Wow that is strange ? i wonder what could have caused it also, could it be possible it was a big roller taht made it in frm the ocean possibly, wonder if anyone else saw it too currious to see if they chime in ............ johnf

I've seen what I term "River rouge waves" in the East river. Same conditions as you mentioned...no wind, flat water, no vessel traffic and all of a sudden, a single 4 footer will come rolling along.

I think they may be caused by a past wake which was caught by a strong tidal current and bounced off the banks of the river.

Perhaps what you saw was a result of spring tide, large wake or strong current that somehow started somewhere else in the bay, joined to form a single wave and radiated to your location.

Just my theory!
 
So that is where all the water went that is missing from our launch pit. I have been hanging in the sling for 2 days but water high tide is still not enough to launch. How about sending it back...
 
Careful what you wish for....if I recall, last year you had too much water!
April showers are almost here.

I can't bottom paint....too cold.
Can't wash boat....no water.
Guess I am staying put!
 
Ya, but all I need is a couple of inches. Hummm, where have I heard that before?
 
We are still a little light on the water too.
The April rains will help, lets just hope they don't kill my boat maintenance weekends.
Everyone rushes to get in, but with it being 33 degrees today, I really don't want to be on boat or working on boat.
Taking dog to dog park!
 
We're havin this seasons first BBQ today....(inlaws are commin).........

Unwrap tomorrow.........then open up the hot tub........
 
I BBQ all winter.
Hot tub is busted but I have the part.
Maybe I will install that this weekend, so I make some progress towards spring chores!
 
Dave, the idea is to get in early, then when the first warm days arrive and all the others who waited are sweating their butts off getting ready, you get to watch from the boat drinking a cold beer.

BBQ season??? What's that??? We BBQ all year round!
 
I am going in April 8th. Would love to get into a bigger boat this season, but selling a boat in this terrible economy is difficult. If anyone knows of a clean 380da with diesels that would accept a trade, keep me in mind.
