I need to replace about 12 inches of rubrail ( don't ask). The problem is, this is the piece that curves 90 degrees around the transom from the port side. I have the rplacement rubber rail, about four feet. This stuff is really sturdy and you can't just bend it around a corner. I know I'll need heat. How much and how to apply it.?

Greg, were about to do about 160 feet of the stuff. Ask me in about two weeks how it went. :0

Good luck. I'm really surprised about how stiff this stuff is.

if the material you are using is plastic, use a heat gun to gently warm it. you may have to replace a longer section so your seams are further away from the turn.

One of my spring projects this year was to pull out the black rub rail insert and re-insert it. I used a heat gun from about a foot away from the surface and got it warm and pliable. It came right out. I did the same to get the insert back in. That stuff, as you know, is super stiff but the heat turns it pretty soft and flexible to make those tough bends and get it inserted. Working in 1' sections worked well.

I hope it gets pliable, have to make a 90 degree bend.

It really does. I had to make that same 90 degree bend at the stern by the swim platform and it went right in. I used a large flat head screw driver to push in the edge as I went along.

Thanks guys. The piece I'm replacing is about 12 inches long, 6 inches on each side of the bend. There is a butt joint to straight pieces on each end. Do you think I should try to bend this with heat at least part way, off the boat and then start to install it, or install one side and then apply heat to bend while in place?

Greg, You are going to need heat to install it anyway because it's so stiff. Besides, I also think its easier to just bend it while installing anyway. I think you may be underestimating how soft and flexible this stuff gets when heated. You will be pleasantly surprised...

good luck!

I hope so, I have a 4 foot section and I certainly can't flex it at all when cold.
