It kind of depends on how bad the current coat is. Sikkens says lightly sand and apply a fresh coat. Mine was looking pretty shabby, so I first sanded, then used a traditional teak cleaner and brightener removing all the old finish, then applied 3 fresh coats of cetol. It looks great. You should be able to test an area and see how it turns out.
