I cannot comment on your specific machine, but I have had success in spot restitching our bimini and installing a new zipper using our Kenmore "household" sewing machine. Couple of thoughts - you will likely need to adjust the thread tensions as you will be using a very heavy polyester versus the normal cotton, and it is CRITICAL to take it easy. Don't push it at all. Only other thought is to check you can get the large amount of canvas through the throat of the machine - this may require some "creative" rollups and / or a second pair of hands to assist.

I have replaced all the canvas (Sunbrella) on my previous boat restoration and repaired all the canvas, clear plastic, and zippers on my present boat restoration using our household Kenmore machine! Read the owner's manual carefully to understand the adjustments. You're going to need thicker than normal needles, at least a pack, suitable for heavy fabris. Don't forget to backstitch the ends of every seam so they don't unravel. Take your time and you'll be fine. A zigzag stitch will usually give you greater holding power. Use polyester, heavy thread; you shouldn't be able to tear the thread with your hands. Good luck. Hy
Thanks for the replies. After a good deal of investigation - I found that the old black Singer with direct drive motors really do the best job for heavy work. I ended up with a 15-91 which has a really large throat area, works with up to a #21 needle, and runs T92 commercial upholstry thread smoothly.
My 15-91 was made in 1939 and needed new wiring. I got another 15-91 machine (1951) in the process plus another 7 machines I just couldn't pass up.
The upholstery is going really well and it's been fun fixing up all these machines. I have to either sell some of these gems on eBay or open a museum I guess!
