why cant i put snaps on my carpet. i keep messing up. cant line them up i think

I tried to use snaps on some cabin carpeting a few years ago. It didn't work. Turned out that if the carpet was cut closely enough, the snaps weren't needed.

I thought about gluing or stitching on velcro, but didn't try it.

Never had carpet to snap down, but I have done a fair amount of canvas work. You might try this:

Put the carpet in place and get it align properly.

Lift the edge of the carpet and reveal the part of the snap in the deck and rub chalk on it.

Lay the carpet back down and apply a little pressure. This should leave a mark on the back of the carpet exactly where the new snap needs to go.

Good luck,
John

Old trick but works. Tape the spots with 3" masking tape first(the 3" tape allows room for a miss.

Load the female snap that's attached to the carpet with Vasoline. Press it down. You'll get a ring minimum on the tape or a glob. Either way drill the middle and that's your spot.

or load the male snap if it's attached to the boat with Vaseline, then repeat. The mark will show on the carpet.

Or chalk. I just always use Vaseline.

The guy who did my canvas work has several female snaps with a sharp pin protruding out of the top. He snaps these to the male, lays the canvas or carpet tentioned as required over the pin, where the pin penetrates the material he marks that point. Then punches the hole to mount the snap.

Lipstick works too.

Here they are:

They are kinda pricey if you only need them once.
