Mercruiser 3.7. The starter is making a loud whine on start-up and seems to be cranking slow. Starter is only 3 years old. Neighbor says the bendix is sticking and I can simply take it off and lube it. I have my doubts, What do the brothers here say?

Could also be weak battery but neighbor in on track except gm have a solenoid not bendix. Solenoid can stick and drive clutch canslip or shaft could be rusted. Any recentwater in the aft end

I'll check the voltage on the battery. If that's good I guess I'll have to pull the starter and muddle through looking / fixing it. Thanks.

Check the slave solonoid connections up under the exhaust manifold. I had something similar and one of the connections there was corroded almost to the breaking point. New ring terminals and cleaned everything and problem solved.

Bendix. There are a number of ways the bendix is pushed out to engage the flywheel. Can also be a bad connection and corroded contacts in the solenoid along with type of linkage. Gotta pull the sucker.(starter)

Pulled the starter and had a neighbor who knew how to check it took a look. Its the starter, not the solenoid. Fortunately, it seems its under warranty since I replaced it less than 3 years ago. Regardless, the R&R job sucks. Thanks for all the good input.
