We went shopping for a new marina for next year Sunday and was looking for opinions on SPBM. The sales guy gave us a tour on the golf cart and it seems to have a lot to offer for a family with kids. We have an 8,6 and 3 year old and need a marina that can keep them busy on the weekend if we end up coming off the boat earlier then planned. Also how is the bar and restaurant?

We went to Patsy's and just didn't get that warm and fuzzy feeling, actually kind of cold.

Penny bridge I hear great things about, but my kids are young and they could use some ameneties that they would enjoy.

Haverstraw, always appears to be more geared towards peaple without kids.

Any input will be greatly apreciated!

Thanks,
MJK

We love SPBM. Has WiFi (though no cable, they're still using the antennas, which may be a problem for many boaters next year). Our little corner of D-dock seem to love it. And they're putting money into the marina, which is another nice sign (tough in this economy to do that). I think a big decision point would be how much water you need -- it is a bit shallow (about 3'-4' at low tide).

There's a party on the 23rd, you can call the marina office & make reservations (it's $20 for non-members) and you can ask anyone there how the experience has been. Or just stop by and ask the around!

From what I have read on ATC all one needs to do is get a conversion box (hurry up and get your Federally sponsored coupons) and you will be good to go. If you can afford to boat, you can certainly afford the box with the coupon.

We are also considering SPBM for the kids sake. The only problems I have there are LOW water at low tide (forget going in or out) and the rock n roll in the marina when the water is rough.

Boating is full of compromises Rob, SPBM is a good one!

We are very happy that our friends talked us into coming back.

I have been unsing them for Winter storage for the past 5 years. I've always been happy with the service, except for the year before last. They've gone through some management changes but since they merged with the marina next to them, the service seems to be very professional. The service department is competant and honest as well. I always felt like they valued my business, even though I was never a summer tenant. They've always been respinsive to my needs and requests. They've gone above and beyond on several occasions. I would recommend them.

MJK, with outdrives you will never have a problem with low water. It has never stopped us from going out. Plus there are a lot of big inboard boats that I see going out as well. You just need to go slow until you are in the deep part of the channel. Wayne has been great putting a lot of $$ into the place, and will bend over to make you happy. A friend just purchased a new boat and the slip they moved him to was a bit low on water at low tide. Wayne ran his tug boat in the slip to blow out the silt. That cost him some money letting that run for a few days. They have added a lot of things for the kids, and I hear they now have a pool table as well. Last year he fixed up the beach and put in tennis. He is also installing new docks. There is plenty of parking also. The people are all very friendly as well. You and your family will like it....

I used to winter there when Gene was there and never had a problem. When the other guy showed up we went somewhere else. Their service department was great as well but the last I knew they were not Volvo certified for my engines/drives warranty work. ( I just checked the web site and it looks like they are Volvo certified now - if this true?)

Is the rock and roll that bad? When we wintered there a few years back and it was really windy out I was like sitting in 3 foot seas. Not fun and dangerous getting off the boat. Not to say its like that all the time but want to know the caveats.

The pool, playground and amenities looks great for the kids though as we are seriously considering it.

How is the dock life? People hang out on the docks and socialize? Or is it go to the boat and go out for the day/weekend and go home?

While Haverstraw is good for the deep water and calm waters we have lost the "love" for the place with the kids and allot of friends getting out of boating.

As for the rock and rolling I do not find that to be a problem, but I guess it depends on where your boat is located. We are on C-Dock facing south and it is rare that we get bounced around that much. I know on our dock we spend a lot of time hanging with friends at the dock and even socialize with this group when the boats are wrapped up on the hard. None of us knew each other prior to boating. Walk around a bit on your own and talk to the boaters. This should give you a good feel for how the place is..

There are not a lot on C-Dock, I have a 5 year old and he has a friend who is also 5 a few boats away, but G dock is loaded with kids.

We have spent 2 seasons at Bamar because of the price, however it is not worth the hassle of worrying about going under the bridge, having no shore power available (only for a day or two) and just no social aspect of boating there. As my kids grow I want them to enjoy boating like I did and meet other kids with the same hobby. The skinny water I don't think will be a problem, we have a 25' that drafts 2 1/2' and if we do move up it will most likely not be any bigger than a 31'.
Patsy's - They just didn't seem as interested in getting us to come in. We spoke with Jimmy (doesn't he look like a Baldwin brother) and he didn’t even bother to get out of his chair or show us around. He said go look around and talk to people.
SPBM – Mr. Ferrari (forgot first name but the sales guy) was awesome. We are also looking at moving up to bigger boat and he seemed pretty interested in selling us the right boat. Obviously he is a salesman so you have to be careful with his opinions, but he seemed trustworthy and was pretty accurate in showing us a few models they had that fit our needs. I have my trailer stored there for the summer and when I asked how much, they just said $100 cash would be good. A few marinas wanted $250-$300. It appears that they are trying to attract families.

Boating_Rob - We should go in together and try and get a package price for next season!

Stay away from G-Dock.. Nothing but a bunch of derelicts over there and beside there will be no slips available on G-Dock next year...

Are there a lot of complaints about the G-Dock? Do you know peaple there that are unhappy on G? Is it the kids on G-Dock that are a problem, or the parents?

I used to use SPBM to pull my boat & bring it to my house. In the spring when they brought it back to launch I would spend a week or two there while they finished my boat. The people are really, really nice. I used to look forward to spring and the short time I would be there hanging out with them. The social aspect there is very nice! I was there one night last week and it does look very good. Lots of improvements. My experience though has been that you rock & roll like crazy. A couple of days it was so bad I actually decided to just leave the boat. It seems like its not just wakes from the river but the wind as well that kicks it up but maybe its better with a bigger boat.

If you don't care about the pool, tennis etc then Pennybridge is a great choice. It does rock & roll sometimes but to me it seems not to be as much of an issue as it is at SPBM.

I too have lost my "love" for Haverstraw. It has that wonderfully deep water, 18ft at low tide, but honestly that is about the only thing we like about it these days. With the restaurant open again & parking lot full, considering I am at the far end of green dock, it is a ridiculously long walk to & from, especially if you are lugging supplies or have the dog. I doubt we will stay there.

Oh Yes.. There are complaints all the time.. mostly regarding the noise after dark and all the drunks stumbling around the dock... I know a few people on G-Dock and they are a bunch of miserable sons of bitches...LOL

Ok Ok.. I am only kidding. (As I notice the size of your boat I can come clean)
We are planning on moving back to SPBM and specifically G-Dock. We were there a few years ago and it is a great group of people.
Also it is the closest to the pool and bathrooms.
As far as I know there are only 1 or 2 slips available on G-Dock for my size boat w/ inboards, so you having a 25' are no threat to us getting a slip... (you would not be on the outer dock, they would but you on the inside closer to the shore).

It is a great marina for the kids, we have a 1 year old so this will be our last season at Haverstraw which is pretty much an adult crowd. we are moving to SPBM because it is so kid friendly..

It is also about 2/3rds. the cost of Haverstraw, which is nice...
