Striping Removal

I started removing some badly weather worn striping from The Dog House. What the h**l kind of glue did they use? LOL Anyway, here are a before and after pic. Was going to replace them, but decided the boat looks less chunky without them.

I agree, boat looks much nicer without the old graphics.
Nice looking boat all around, can sure tell when a boat is well cared for.
 
Looks good. I was going to replace mine this year, but after seeing yours, I might just remove them and see how it looks without..
 
I did a quick photoshop, with and photoshoped without..Open to comments?..

I had a 2557 Montego before my 2757, and took the striping off like in your picture. It looks a lot bigger without the stripes. It looked so good without that several that were docked near me took them off too. I'm going to leave the gray and dark blue on because...well, it was hell to get off what I did! Heat and a scraper and it took 2 days to take off the two stripes across the transom and the light blue on the sides.
 
I removed and replaced my bottom strip 2 years ago, and used one of those erasers that fit on a drill. I scraped for 3 hours and got nowhere, then bought the erasser and removed both sides in half an hour...Worked like a charm, and didnt hurt the gel..
 
+1 on the 3M stripe removal tool. Makes vinyl removal a cakewalk. My 2 cents on RamSports alteration: I think it updates the look of the boat-less is more.

Now I just wish I had done it earlier so the gelcoat under the striping wasn't so different than the non striped gelcoat
 
I used the 3M eraiser on a previous boat and it worked great. I took all of the decals off a 25 foot pontoon boat which would have been almost impossible any other way! The glue eventually came off.

I have a decal question, though. My Montego has some pretty ugly decals on the back...like the "32" and the "Carver" letting. I have searched the web for replacements but have not found anything for the "32". The Carver decals, though not really the same, are available. Question: Would it look OK if I didn't replace the "32"...maybe even the rear "Carver"? I could have a Carver decal on the radar arch, like I've seen in come pictures. What would the the non-tacky apporach be? (I'll be buffing everything out first, of course)

The 3M Stripe Eraser is the best removal tool. I discovered that in the 80's when I did refinishing. Most stripes I left off. Boats appear cleaner, larger and less cluttered. It also started a new trend in the sport fishing boats. When not refinishing, the surface previously under the stripe would become less noticeable after a month or two. When refinishing, I would often customize by filling in front house windows and removing flybridge windshields and bow rails. At first, it looked kind of stripped but quickly caught on. Looked much larger also.

Doug: Here are a couple of shots of our Montego, with both the transom stripe and side '32' removed, FYI.

Oh, and congrats, after 2.5 years here, you inspired me to get my sh** together, and finally post some pics. These are my first...

Beautiful boat, Scott. It will take me quite a while to get anywhere close to that leaque! I can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can get out there and start the transformation!
 
Sorry to side track, but...

Either I am missing something and can't see it, or... How is that boat staying on that trailer? It doesn't seem possible that it could balance on there like that? Is there some huge amount of weight up front to keep it from falling off the back? or something underneath I am missing? Just looks crazy to me...
 
Hey, Scott- It looks like you have some additional railing that my Montego does not have. On the starboard side, you have some railing that goes further down, just behind or even with the radar arch. I wish mine had that...always a little interesting climbing forward when under way! Did you have it installed...was it a factor option...is it because it is one year off of mine?

Honestly...I cringed, and bit my lip, as it came out of the water like that, but there is nothing else holding it there. The haulout crew were completely comfortable, but I almost had to walk away...and they used no straps to further secure it.
What's even more ridiculous, is that I climbed aboard, once it was in the shop, via the swim platform and ladder, to pull the Genny out (for service). I thought for sure it would teeter/totter on the trailer with me on it (I'm 265lbs), but it didn't budge. The main reason for all this is that our water level is/was quite low at the end of the season, affecting the ramp.
