Hi Guys,

A friend bought a boat near Knoxville which needs to be brought up to the great lakes. He asked if I would join him on the trip which I really want to do however would also like to not get fired in the process. I work remotely and need a reliable cell signal. Has anyone made this trip or spent any time on the river system and can comment on cellular signal reliability. I have ATT cell service and Verizon Ipad.

All I can attest to is that most of lake guntersville, which is part of the Tennessee river system in Alabama has pretty good Verizon coverage but lousy AT&T coverage. The Verizon coverage map shows great coverage, hopefully true, the AT&T map shows pretty good coverage, but is was not true on the lake.

I have done that route a few times over the last few years, with verizon you will have coverage almost 98% of the time.

I have AT&T and have not complaints. Yes, there are a few dead spots, but no more so than the Verizon that my son and wife have.

Here is what I can recommend being in the communications business and having the need to stay connected. Get your self 2 units the 1st a good external WiFi antenna and bridge router like the Wave WiFi or WIRIE products, then for cellular I recommend Verizon LTE service, use a USB modem like the PanTech ULM290 with an external Omni antenna and a CradlePoint router. The external antenna should be an Omni and it must cover 694MHz through at least 2100MHz.
Look at the AT&T and VZW coverage maps but make sure you are looking for 4G LTE coverage otherwise 3G service is terribly slow.
I can provide more specifics as needed.

If your friend wants and needs solid communications he should install the equipment I mentioned above. I realize this isn't your boat.

Thanks for the info guys!! I'm thinking we should be mostly covered and I'll be able to get some work done as there will be sprint, att, and verizon devices on board.

Bill, the boat is a 72 Burger which is mechanically sound however is in need of a refit which it will undergo once back in the great lakes. I will definitely pass along the info to my friend as things progress.

And that Burger would be "Parabellum" in Vonore, TN, according to YW. Single screw according to the YW post. (Really? One prop?)

Max,
Looks like Parabellum's on the market but still in Tennessee. Your friend's sale and/or trip didn't work out after all?

Hi Bill,

My friend who purchased it had he had been looking for an older burger for a few years as he had a lot of free time due to a non-compete from when he sold the last company. The idea was to completely refit up here in WI (another friend just purchased old Palmer Johnson facility). This spring, his non-compete expired and he started a new company that has been doing extremely well. When we got down to TN, although the boat was exactly what he expected/wanted, he became concerned that taking on this project would take his eye off the ball with his new company. I tried everything (taking him out on boat rides, medicating him (rum) etc) as it was a fun boat to run and I wanted to make the trip, but in the end he decided it was the right boat wrong time. He put it back up for sale, and in the meantime the yard has been doing some minor work on her.

I was disappointed to say the least, however I wouldn't be surprised if my friend ends up keeping it and moving it up here at some point.

Hi, Max,
Thanks for your reply. That's an interesting turn of events. Good for your friend's business, but I'm sorry that you (both) didn't make the trip. That would have been a beautiful transit. I'm berthed in Hampton, but my home is Middle Tennessee. So the Tennessee (and Little Tennessee) and Cumberland Rivers are near to my heart, hence my interest in this boat in Vonore.

Thanks again for your note. That's a beautiful boat (what Burger isn't?), so here's hoping.... (Shucks, if he needs a crew, give me a shout!)

was at burger boat yard when this boat was splashed. saw it the next year on the upper mississippi. george.

Very cool. I believe the first owner was Ray Kroc.

It was a fun boat to run and the classic lines etc are really good looking in my opinion. Going down there and not bringing her up as planned was sort of like telling your kids Santa wasn't going to make it on Christmas morning...
