Things to do/see in RI when you're bored

Heading to RI in early November for a 4-5 days of sightseeing and to pick up a diesel engine I bought in Portsmouth. Particularly interested in maritime history. Maybe a few marine/boat recyclers or boat equipment suppliers. Any suggestions as to what/where to go and see?

Any RO's out there where we can lock up our trailer (small utility trailer) while we're sightseeing so we don't have to drag it around with us everywhere? It'd be greatly appreciated.

Rhode Island is a pretty big state, it would help if you narrowed it down by posting which town you will be in/near.

Picking up the engine in Portsmouth on the 2nd of Nov. but we're free to wander and look for the rest of the week. Mystic Seaport and Battleship Cove places we'll likely visit.

Anybody wanna take us to Block Island in their bowrider eh?

If you go to Mystic, make sure you eat at the Daniel Packer Inn, it has some of the best food I have ever eaten!

Sorry Rivebed. Just noticed you post now and we'll be on our way back west in the morning.

Picked up the engine today. Buddy ran it up before we packed it in the u-Haul.

Got lost half a dozen times getting to Portsmouth from West Greenwich. There were quite a few errors on the Magellan maps that turned us around sometimes as much as 20 miles out of our way. How did we ever get by without GPS's eh?

We did get to Battleship cove. That was a great tour of the ole' battlewagons. Very nicely done too. I'd love to have a couple of days to crawl around them ole' boats.

Stopping in Mystic tomorrow then onto Orance County Choppers on Wednesday then home.

Thats funny, i keep the boat two towns over from Mystic, but my office is in the same town as OC Choppers. Let me know if you need any help around Newburgh

Hey Dan

We missed our turn off of I-84 and ended up just north of the airport. A short drive back towards town and there it was!!!

"Dear Diary. I dropped a deuce at Orange County Choppers Today!" *lol* 2-1/2 hrs on the road, nature called!

The place is amazing. A virtual museum of all their show builds. What amazed me most was the souvenirs didn't break the bank. We spent double the amount at Mystic which is also simply amazing. That place is definitely a national treasure. I wish we had more time there. We'll definitely be back, maybe by water next time.

So far the engine has stayed in the u-haul. I had my doubts the cheezy little steel rings they put in them would hold but it has.

What's with all the cars in Conn running at high speed in the fast lane on their compact spares? If I saw one I saw a dozen of them today!

1925 kms (1200 mi) round trip! Loved every mile of it too!

We wanted to visit Orange Country Choppers in Newburg NY to pick up some x-mas presents for the kid. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

This is the Firemans bike, a tribute to the 343 firemen who lost their lives in the 9/11 tragedy. Definitely a moving memorial.

Time to relax. 1925 Kms (1200 miles) in 3 days. There's a few more pictures here...

We stayed overnight on the battleship Massachusetts when my son was in Boy Scouts. It was an amazing night.
 
Hey ductboy, Do you live in the Newburgh area and spend weekends around Mystic? That's a long ride to the boat, I hope you get good use of it.

Just did that last summer. Had a blast. Kids get to run around the ship and look everywhere. Dads follow them around with an excuse to go everywhere. Only bummer is my daughters really wanted to go too! Even the food wasn't too bad.

Yes I live over in Cornwall, and boated there as a child and into my 30's. About 7 years ago my wife and I decided to keep the boat in CT and then in RI to be closer to the places we like to cruise to. In 2006 we bought a small house there so friends could visit when we were not away on the boat. The ride from NY takes about 2 1/2 hours if they are not paving 84, rebuilding 66, or working on the bridge over the CT River (all things that they have been doing for the past four years).

Where we are in RI is perect for reaching BI, Greenport, Montauk, Newport, Mystic, and the CT River all in about an hour or less.

Hey Dan

Aye to that man. The construction was going on everywhere. Must be all that stimulus money floating around. It wreaked havoc with our GPS (Magellan). We got turned around in Providence a few times following bad leads from the GPS and ended up going right through the downtown core. It was a nice detour. For some reason I thought New England was flat. Some of those hills would be murder in the winter!!!
