Just wondering if anyone has done this trip from the Hudson through the LI Sound. How long should it take there and back and what are some good places to stop along the way.

Thanks,

Jeff

Depends on how fast your boat travels??????

I can make it to the Vineyard in about 7 hours from Liberty Landing.

I cruise at 26 knots. This assumes good seas and no fog.

Where are you coming from, what boat?

Jonathan

Is there a good marina in Nantucket that takes reservations in advance?

Nantucket Boat Basin takes reservations. I haven't been there myself but have friends who have gone there. The reservation form is on their website.

I will be taking a REgal 3560, which cruises around 30 knots. But of course, depending on seas. I am coming from the Hudson River in Haverstraw. I am surprised by that, seems pretty quick.

Nantucket boat basin is great. Depending on your fuel tanks, fuel up in Montauk/stay over at the Montauk Yacht Club, fuel up in Edgartown/stay over night wherever you can there, then run to Nantucket with full tanks.

We were fogged into Nantucket for about three days, had to run five to seven foot seas to get back. We passed a 40 + foot sloop that was pitch poling so violently I was amazed anyone could stay on it. We sustained a fair bit of damage also. Wires pulling out of switches, trim tabs failing etc. It was a good thing Bob was not trying to stay with us in his bowrider.

What I am trying to say is leave a window of several days if possible before and after your planned Nantucket arrival/departure dates. The comments about going to Block must be raised to the power of 5 when going to Nantucket. Hence waiting in Edgartown for good weather to run over to Nantucket is a good plan.

You don't want to get fuel in Nantucket, because the big super yachts will sometimes hog the fuel dock for a LONG time to fill their tanks. Same deal for Block, no superyachts, but just super busy. Montauk is really good to zip into for fuel, and zip out. Edgartown can be a long wait for fuel also. Oakbluffs in MV is probably faster to get fuel, but not as well situated as Edgartown to sit and wait for good weather.

We will heading to Nantucket from Block. Plan on heading to Hyannis after that so the Admirals family can spend the weekend with us. Will most likely fill up the tanks at Block since we will be leaving there mid-week and shouldn't be so bad.

Any recommendations For Hyannis? Is Hyannis Marina decent?

(Sorry to hijack your thread rugger!)

That's ok Rommer, I am getting more info as well. so it's all good.

Jeff

John, a friend of mine stayed in Hyannis last year, I think at Hyannis marina, and he really liked it. I should see him Monday night, I'll check with him then to double-check the marina.

Jeff, how long are you planning for the trip? Lots of places to stop along the way depending on how many days you are taking for the trip.

John,

I am planning on taking a week for that trip. Let me know if you think this is too little time or if I should try and allocate a little more time.

Thanks,

Jeff,

If you could stretch it out a little more than a week I would, that way you could make an extra stop, cut down the travel time on each leg, and give you more time to explore. But it can be done in a week if that's all you can do. I haven't been to Nantucket yet but we went to Martha's Vineyard last year. We did 4 nights in Newport, 4 in MV, and a one night stop at Block Island on the way back to break up the trip (I'm on the south shore of LI). We stayed at Edgartown in Martha's Vineyard on a mooring, last year the reservations were available starting 3/1 from their website. If you want to be at a dock, Oak Bluffs would be the place. The docks there are right in the middle of everything so it's a busier place.

If your primary objective is to spend time at Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, you might want to spend a night in Montauk in each direction. That would break up the trip and fuel there is relatively cheap. There are plenty of other popular spots along the way - Essex, Mystic, Newport, Block Island and more - but if you try to cram too much into a week you'll be moving around too much to really enjoy each spot.

As far as your weather question in the other thread (easier to answer here where it won't get lost in all the other posts), this website has the NOAA forecasts for the different zones off RI and MA - http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/zone/east/boxmz.htm
As you get further east you will get the forecasts on your VHF for the different areas also. When I'm out there I'll keep close tabs on the forecast every day even if I'm planning to be in one place for a few days because you sometimes have to be flexible and leave early or late to get reasonable conditions. Fog is also common, which could slow travel plans considerably.

Everything that was said,
Since your coming from the Hudson I would think that stoping in CT for fuel would be better/cheeper that Montauk,NY or Block - we sometime stop in Noank which is at the mouth of the Mystic river, not realy out of the way if comming up the sound

We come from Huntington so the trip to Oaks Bluff for us is only a 163 miles each way - with our tankage we can go round trip without having to fuel up- but will stop on the Ct side on the way back to get cheaper fuel

I can't agree with that,
We got stuck in Oak bluffs during a Formula Rendezvous(18 boats) when Hurricane Charlie hit and felt quite safe there- staid a couple of extra days to make sure that it past – the town is right there and food & booze was plentiful - not a scratch on the boat- but walking the dogs was not fun

Many people do not like Oak Bluffs because you frequently end up docked next to the main road and everyone wandering by is looking into your boat. We stay in Edgartown right on the town dock and like it there. Max size limit of 30 feet though on that dock. No reservations for that dock, FCFS, no power either.

If you are waiting for a break in the weather to go to Nan, you likely want to be at a reserved dock in Edgatown to dash across to Nantucket within VERY narrow fog and sea condition windows.

I recall two fuel docks in OakBluffs, only one in Edgatown.

Many folks call the marinas on either side of the "gap" to get the latest reports from mariners "crossing through." You truly are in the Atlantic going to Nantucket, good luck, it is well worth it when you get there!

The Whaling museum in Nantucket is a must, several historic walking tours/historic house visits were the highlight of our trip. Also attended a few special late night lectures at the Museum which were very good. Talk to someone in the Whaling Museum to get the skinny on their schedule, and best walking tours and private historic home visits to do. They are not something you will learn about at the tourist bureau. Might be an idea to call ahead and plan your Nantucket visit around those events.

Jeff's boat is a Regal 3560

We stayed at Hyannis Marina about 12 years ago, it was very nice, we enjoyed it.

On the vineyard, we stayed at Vineyard Haven Marina, they were very friendly. It right next to the Black Dog, where Slick Willie liked to hang out!

I thought Vineyard Haven was dry, no booze permitted? I guess cigars are okay though.

There was plenty of booze when I was there!
