Trying to sell my boat

Hey everyone,

It's been a while since I have posted, but here it goes. I put the boat up for sale about a week and a half ago and so far no takers. I'm not getting out of boating just looking to upgrade and if I have to take a season off to do so, so be it. However there are a few boats that the family and I are looking at so....

If anyone knows of anyone looking for a solid, relible boat there is a 1987 Sea Ray Sundancer for sale in the classified section. Offers are welcomed and encouraged. This has been a great boat for my family and I but unfortunately we just need more room and need to upgrade.

Thanks in advance for your support and perhaps we'll bump into each other over the summer.

No trailer, boat stays in a slip for the season. Pulling off the shrink wrap this weekend to get her commissioned :)
 
I wouldn't expect a boat to sell in a week and a half, even in a booming economy. In this economy, it may take quite a while.
 
In this economy........ you MAY do better if you do a trade-in deal.

Seems the only way to sell a boat these days is to follow the Ernesto model. Take plenty of pictures with a sexy looking bow ornament and start a conversation about the boat I mean ornament in the Boatered classified section...
 
Make sure the boat is visible and put a for sale sign on it.

Advertising gave me some traffic but foot traffic is what sold it.
 
For cheaper boats can always do the raffle route.
Sell 100 raffles at $150 each and you got $15K and some lucky person gets a cheap boat!
 
.........or install a matching set of cup and fire extinguisher holders.....that should help !
 
Dave, funny you mentioned the raffle thing. I thought about doing that once but was really never sure it would work. I had seen something like that advertised in a magazine once. Would be interesting to hear if anyone on the board ever raffled a boat off and how they went about it. Maybe I'll post it on the board.
 
I do like the raffle idea, just not sure if it would be an ideal situation, legally speaking. I am considering a trade but you all know how that usually goes.

At this stage of the game, I plan on commisioning the boat and getting her in the water and presentable. Perhaps once the shrink wrap comes off she will gain some attention.

That being said, someone out there is gonna get a sweet deal on a boat so if anyone knows anyone tell them not to be shy. Make an offer, what have you got to lose?

i would suggest craigslist...its free. i put my boat on there and just could not believe the large number of replies i received. its worth a shot. good luck john
 
This is going to be a tough year to sell a boat. Probably even tougher than last year.
You might want to consider posting it on Craigslist for more exposure. Make sure to include pictures if you post it there. Most people won't even look at the ads without pictures.
Better yet, consider keeping it for a little while until things get better. The actual sale prices of the good clean used boats that I know of that sold last summer was about .60 cents on the dollar of book value in some cases. It is like a return to the very late eighties and early nineties.

Guy at Watch Hill did the raffle thing. He was there every week with his sign and boat.
Boat I think was called "Captain Jack". He sold raffles all summer and then at the end of the summer he raffled it off. Told everyone where and when. He wanted to sell 100 for $150, but I think he only sold 87, but he raffled it anyway. It is legal, you just have to make sure everyone knows the rules. Like I said, it ain't gonna work with a $100K boat, but for cheaper boats it is a option.

Funny story about this boat....It had a clear plexiglass door on the cabin. Well not clear, it was smoked, but when the lights were on down below you can see in. One night we are walking on the dock and we see all these kids laughing. We get up to the spot and we look in and you can see right in through the door and there is this guy and his woman getting it on. Plus to make things worse he was on a end spot and some kids were looking in through the port holes that had no curtains!!
 
Thanks for the info Dave. I guess being at a marina you have more exposure than we have in our backyard. It's still something to think about as our boat isn't a big one (worth about $10K). We'll see what happens this summer after we use it awhile and decide we want something else (we're never satisfied!!!)

I bet the husband is going to be pissed if he reads this…. He was waiting for the ferry to watch hill that night….. [:-censored]
 
Dave, how many kids did you have to push out of the way to get a "front row seat"???
